We have our appointment for our visa applications on 17th June so I now need to take out our private medical insurance in readiness. Has anyone any good or bad experiences that will help me choose a company? For example ease of accessing help without having to travel a long way, whether there was an English speaking doctor etc. I’m favouring ASSSA at the moment but would love to know if anyone has direct experience claiming and whether it was good or not?

When you take out your private healthcare insurance you are given a list of places authorised by your company.

You don’t “claim” on your insurance you just take your card, make your appointment and receive treatment.

This system depends on your insurer and medical conditions. For many companies, authorization from them is required prior to consultation or treatment.

I think it's important to find a company that has a GP, family doctor close to where you are living. They are your first contact to be be referred if necessary to a specialist.

Thanks for all the replies, sorry I’ve only just seen them as we’re currently on holiday in Egypt and I forgot to log in and check. If anyone has any company they would personally recommend I’d love to hear.

I had insurance with Asisa and now have it with Sanitas (the last one being a special offer for being a BBVA customer). I can recommend both of them. My experience is the same as that of "GrahamLynn"  - if I want to see a GP or consultant I just make an appointment directly with them. If the doctor recommends a test, I don't generally need any additional authorization unless it is something a bit more involved like a colonoscopy and even then it is just a quick phone call, no paperwork. It really feels like I am paying to have access to an alternative health system rather than insurance as such.
