Hi all, I've been prescribed Statins for high Cholesterol, I'm 72 and not sure about taking Statins as I've heard some horror stories. My parents died of one a stroke and the other a heart attack so I know I need to do something. My daughter in law was prescribed Statins but took a natural regulating supplement from the chemist. It did work for her and changed her diet considerably even though she was a veggie. Can anybody offer some advice please

I also used to take Statins for high cholesterol for some years. When I had a blood test done last year for some other ailment they took me off the statins!! So maybe you won't need to be taking them for to long. Ask your doctor for a blood test.

Your doctor will have taken a decision based on risk vs benefit. I would go with them for the time being but with diet change and plenty of exercise you might get off them in time.

If you get side effects then there are different types your doctor can try.

My husband tends to be naturally high in cholesterol and was given statins. However  he decided to add more cholesterol absorbing stuff to his diet like oats. He has a couple spoonfuls in a bit of Greek yoghurt with fruit , for breakfast. His cholesterol is now back down and steady for 4 years

Hi

Yes I take them, but it is in my family on my mother’s side, so I have always had a good diet but it’s still high, I used to swim regular, but GP gave me Simvastatin, it caused pain in my arms, but if you read what some experts say they don’t really believe you, so I stopped taking and have been given Pravastatin , no pain,  no problem , try for 3 months and  usually you get a blood test to see if it is reduced, but you have done well to get to 72 maybe look at your diet.

Hi I am 70 and have taken statins for High cholesterol for 30 years having been part of the original trial in Scotland. I have never experienced any side effects and have been glad I took them when so many have strokes or the like without them. If it were me I would not think twice about taking them .

I agree that by adjusting your diet helps and that is probably the reason I was taken off statins. My cholesterol was high when I lived in the UK but after living here in Spain and drastically adjusting my diet I was eventually taken of Statins.

Thank you all, that has helped me knowing there are a lot of you out there having the same problems. The only thing I regret is I have a grapefruit tree in the garden with loads of fruit on. I have had grapefruit for years for my breakfast and to suddenly stop is awful. Never mind my health is more important
