We are in the process of applying for our NLV.  Our current medical provider here in the UK is Axa.  Our plan is a UK-only plan, therefore not acceptable.  They transferred me to their international branch, but they quoted £1087 per month for both of us.  That's way too much.

Does anyone have any suggestions of the best medical cover to get for Spain?  And rough prices? I know it will depend on individual circumstances.

We will spend some time in Spain and some time here in the UK. Will we need 2 policies to cover both countries?

Just trying to get everything in order before we book our appointment at the Spanish consular here in uk.

Thanks everyone

Kind regards

Jo

Hello Jo

Although I cannot recommend a health insurane co. to you, I see you intend to move between Spain & UK. The time out of Spain  with a NLV is limited & , unsure whether you know this, I have copied a section that I have found  by googling & have  posted below.

Hope it helps with your health cover decision.

How long can you be out of Spain on a NLV?6 monthsFirstly, you must not be outside Spain for more than 6 months within a period of one year. In the case of sporadic departures (in your first year in the country 1 month, in the second 3 months, etc.); the sum of these periods outside Spanish territory during the last 5 years may not exceed 1 year.
Cheers

When my partner and I moved out here four years ago, we took out our health insurance with ASSSA. We are both pleased with how it has worked out, anything we have requested has been provided efficiently.

The policy excluded a couple of minor pre-existing conditions. We were 63 and 57 at that time. One of their selling points is that they give you a lifetime guarantee that the price will not increase by more than the rate of inflation maximum, regardless of you aging. That's how its panned out. We have both been paying around the 1000€ mark since the start. Reading other posts on here over the years, I'd say that's a pretty typical premium, so your 1,000€ for two sounds cheap, although it is age dependent, of course.

We're both regular users of the Spanish health system now under the provisions of the withdrawal agreement and my S1, but we will probably keep up the policies as a belt and braces measure. The policy includes health insurance cover when travelling abroad.

Hola Jo,

My wife and I retired to Spain in March 2021 and use a well recommended (on this forum) broker for our various insurances. My Health Insurance is with Salus and the total annual premium for this year is 2,800 'ish Euros. I don't remember the split but my wife is 67 and yours truly 61 years of age.

Hope this helps!

Those who come to Spain on an NLV and without an S1 are disqualified from using the NHS so yes, you will need health cover for visits to the UK although that can take the form of comprehensive travel insurance as opposed to an annual contract which, for the amount of time you are permitted to spend in UK (out of Spain actually) would not represent value for money.

I think the OP was a £1000/ month so not cheap!!

We used ASSSA for our residency application....https://www.asssa.es/en/health-insurance/

Was about 1,000 euros per annum for a 62 YO without any issues. You're not allowed any co pay but the company will advise on the minimum policy for residencia.

Good luck.

Yes, you're right, I should have read the OP more carefully!

That premium quoted is way, way over the top.

My wife (59) and I (62) have just changed from DKV to ASSSA for a lot of the reasons Herfordjack mentioned. We are paying 163€ per month for a joint standard policy with no pre existing conditions. This figure will not change for the life of the policy, unlike DKV which increases every year.

I would recommend you avoid DKV when looking for quotes. Our experience with them was far from satisfactory on the one occasion we required their services and they are also more expensive than ASSSA.

Hi Jo,

We're with ASSSA and have been pleased with their service.  We took out our policies, via Jennifer Cunningham Insurance Agents in Benijofar, when I was 55 and my husband was 58.  We have mid range cover, no pre-existing conditions and no co-pay, and we pay €1,780 total per annum (that's for both of us, not each).  We're now 61 and 64, and have had no price increases on our policies.

Kind regards,

Kim
