Had it not been for the Coronavirus pandemic, we would be at our property, purchased last year, and applying for Residencia. Hope the restrictions are lifted soon and there will be sufficient time, before the end of the year, to submit our application for residencia. I seem to remember reading that you have to be there in person to receive the approval, which may take quite a while to process.

I received responses to my previously submitted message regarding the shipping of my household effects to Spain, but it was not stated whether I would need to be resident to avoid the payment of import duty.

I would like to take the opportunity to add my very grateful thanks to Jim for all the hard work he puts in to provide the excellent guidance on all the varied topics he covers.

Import of used household items is tax exempted during the first 6 months after approval of residence. To avoid long waiting times at Spanish customs prepare a complete list of all items incl. value and have it stamped by your nearest Spanish consulate. Most probably you won't need it, but it keeps you in the safe side.

...s you in the safe side.

I have brought over household goods 3 van loads (most recently on March 12th) and never been asked for inventory nor felt tax would be necessary on my own private goods. (Its amazing how few goods weigh 1.3 ton if you are doing it legal without overweighing).

Surely we are still being considered as in EU till December so why would there be a need to disclose goods?

Next year that,s another story. Also did I not read so long as you,re in Spain by December 31st, and tried to get an appointment for residency you then have a further 6months to obtain it (under original EU rules for requirements).?

Also who knows now whether this date may be extended due to present situation.

Regards

Pauline

You are correct.

You do not need to inform Customs for a  personal move within the EU, and that includes the UK untill the end of the year.
