Looking at buying a villa out in the country of Catral town.  All the villas have high walls and understand crime was a problem a few years ago and wondering if villas are still targets there.

Have lived here for nearly four years and all my neighbours along with myself have never had any break ins or thefts etc in that time.

Older people here say ten years ago plus it was a big problem around here like other places as well when the crash happened and many people were hit hard and couldn’t make ends meet.

Other neighbours say when the boom was on and builds were going up left right and center that thiefing was rift and most was being done by immigrant labour brought in? How true that was I don’t know but all I can say we have always felt very secure here and the police generally are spotted once or twice a week touring around etc.

Most people have alarms and the high walls are seen everywhere in spain I would say along with security grills etc which are normally required for Insuarnce reasons above everything else.

Generally you can leave your car unlocked and windows down etc locally and all will be safe etc and older people tend to look out for each other like in the old days in the UK when you could leave your doors open etc!

Please do your homework in respect of illegal properties, and, in particular, mosquitos.   Catral is on the flood plain and the water table is close to the surface.  Otherwise come to Crevillent where my house in the campo is for sale - and its LEGAL!

Richard - a slightly biased opinion...…..

Catral is very safe and I feel more confident walking around at night than I do in the UK . . . . But, too many people leave their common sense behind in the UK when they move out here! Leaving car doors and windows unlocked is just asking for trouble wherever you are.  There will always be an opportunist around so don't get complacent.  Take normal precautions and you'll be fine.  Do check on legality of property though because sometimes the thieves are not where you expect them to be!
