The Repsol website is telling me the current price of a 12.5 kg Butane is 19.55 euro.

Thank you Geoffro,

I purchased 2x bottles yesterday at a service station whom was selling at the Repsol correct price.

The Repsol website is a good place to start and check the correct price before going around to service stations some of which are putting a few Euros on the Repsol price,  as I have now found out.

Paid over 22€ at Briogas in Catral for butano last week. Wish I'd known this then.

Repsol were, maybe still are, giving a voucher on the bill cutting 2 euros from your next bottle of gas. Just be grateful you're not in France, gas bottles are double the price they are in Spain...

Just for a bit of context... My 1st bottle of Butano (Repsol) in Dec '20 was just over 12 euros

That's not the full story.

The government sets a maximum price for gas bottles and distributors are not permitted by law to go above this price, prices are reviewed every two months but cannot rise by more than 5%.

Currently Repsol gas bottle prices are €18.63 (Inc IVA) for a 12.5kg bottle. Cepsa prices are not regulated by the government and are €19.95 (Inc IVA) for a 12.5kg bottle.

Independent outlets are permitted to charge up to €1 more but it's widely abused so if you want the best price stick with Repsol and buy replacements only from Repsol garages.

BTW Propano is cheaper and in terms of actual calorific content per bottle there is no advantage in paying the extra for Butano.

I paid €22 for butane (red label) propane is cheaper but works at a different pressure so you need the correct regulator for the bottle you use. Propane is generally used for outdoor storage as it will work in lot colder temperatures than butane can. But it doesn’t get very cold in Spain 😰

Just to clarify propane is cheaper but has a lower calorific value therefore the temperature will be lower in a bbq. It is more useful for bbq's in UK as it will not freeze at very low temperatures whereas butane can stay in liquid form at zero degrees centigrade. In Spain Butane is best form of fuel for bbq's.

Where have you been over the last few winters in Spain?   It can be very cold here during the winter months.

Hi Darro

Where do you get propane bottles then and are they cheaper? Is there a difference? I have a repsol and a cepsa bottle, didn't realise there was a price difference as we only use it for occasional heating so forget what last price was

Regards

Pauline

Hi,

I have never used butano. As others have said there is no advantage, in fact there is one big disadvantage that being that below freezing the gas will not come out of the bottle,  propane will come out down to -43C so no problem.  (this is due to the boiling points of the different gases)

My best recommendation is to pick up some propano bottles from your local car boots and rastros etc and just simply change over.  The regulators will fit both bottles unlike the UK.  Then sell your butano ones on here.

All the garages sell both gases, but buy the bottles that you can change nearest your house.  They will NOT swap a butane for a propane.

Kevman sorry but you are wrong.  What you are saying is correct for the UK but not Spain.

In Spain all regulators are the same, same fitment and same output pressure..

I have a number of gas appliances and they all run quite happily all year round on propane.
