Any advice on casual/part-time work for a retired British male former construction engineer? Also previous casual work experience in driving, gardening, bar work, painting.

Looking for work in the Costa Blanca area.

Hi,

Do you live in the uk with a uk passport or are you a full resident in Spain now?

If you are still living in the UK and hold a UK passport you will need to have a visa to be able to move to Spain permanently.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply.

I do currently live in the UK and have a UK passport. I am not a full resident of Spain but would likely look to apply for residency if necessary, assuming I am eligible. I was born in March 1962. When would be the best time to apply for this and do you know if I would be eligible?

Regards,

Girdon

There are 2 types of visa.

The Non Lucrative Visa (NLV), which by it's name precludes work of any kind and for which you will need to demonstrate an annual income of some €29,000 or €37,000 for a couple.

A work visa requires you to have a confirmed offer of emoyment by a Spanish employer and in that case they will apply for the visa on your behalf.

In both case visas must be obtained in UK before moving, you cannot apply from in country.

If, as it sounds, you are looking to move to Spain and earn something to perhaps supplement a smaller income or just keep active then it's simply no possible.

Hi,

Thanks, yes that was the plan, to essentially supplement a smaller income. Sounds like it’s not going to be possible to do that!

I am able to demonstrate an annual income for a single person as you have previously outlined above, however, I was considering securing some form of part time employment in order to keep myself occupied, and also to top up and supplement my income to a certain extent.

Would I be able to obtain residency? Is there a certain age at which one is no longer eligible to secure residency?

Regards,
Gordon

Hi,

You can obtain residency by certain conditions.

You will need to have a visa as described by Darro in his last post, either non lucrative visa or work visa and full healthcare.

You can't get residency here without a visa.

You must apply for a visa from the Spanish consulate in the UK.

You can't have it both ways I'm afraid and visa wise age doesn't come into it.

Being under UK pension age you will need full private health insurance ant the will not include the cost of any medicines you may need.

Thanks to both of you. And thanks for the links.

So the non lucrative visa would the best option for me? Presumably most UK GB passport holding pensioners who retire and move to Spain, and don’t want to have to leave the country after 90 days, (because of Brexit), choose the non lucrative visa?

Gordon

Hi Gordon,

Yes, the most popular visa for retirees is the non lucrative visa (NVL).

You will need to prove that you have an income of around €28,000 and full healthcare. If you are of pensionable age you can get your healthcare through the S1 healthcare scheme which is paid for by the UK government.

You will also need to supply a few other documents which are easily available.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply.

My income would not come from one single source, but will come from different funds and assets I currently hold. Drawing down from them would provide me with the necessary €28,000. I would therefore need to provide proof of these different funds and assets to the appropriate authorities. Would this be correct?

I am 62 years old, and do not have entitlement to my UK pension until I am 67, so I do not yet have health insurance. I presume I would apply for the S1 Healthcare after my 67th birthday? Would that be correct?

Thanks and regards,

Gordon
