Ok so finally out here only to find out I can only stay for 90 days.  I take it from all the info I have read that I need to get myself off to the local bobbies sharpish to register if I want to stay for the 5 months I have rented this apartment for.

Question: can I get help with this anywhere in El Campello as I don't have a printer to print these blasted forms out.

The other problem I now have is that I no longer want to drive my car back to the UK in December so will need temporary car insurance for 2 months,

Question: does anyone know of a car insurance that will insure a British car for 2 months.

I know ive been a little too caught up in the going to Spain excitement to do my homework before I left but lesson learned.  We hope to come across every year for approx. 5-6 months so if anyone has any suggestions im all ears.

Thanks in advance

"I'VE BEEN AN IDIOT"

You're far from alone but at least you're acknowledging the problem which puts you ahead of those with their heads still buried in the sand!

Regarding car insurance, it's a fundamental precept that where a car is temporarily imported to another country it must at all times remain 100% road legal in terms of the country where it's registered so for a UK car that means tax, MOT if applicable, and UK insurance.

For transitioning from UK registration to Spanish most Spanish insurers will cover a UK regged car but on a strictly temporary non extendable basis (nominally 2 months) to allow for the process, it's of course not for the convenience of anyone seeking to manipulate the rules to accommodate their own agendas.

Why is it you think you need Spanish insurance though?

Although when you've used up the foreign travel days your insurer allows your cover drops to 3rd Party that remains in force throughout the EU for the remainder of its duration. Your insurer may be willing to extend full cover - at a price.

The above of course ignores the rule that you may only keep a foreign registered car in another country for 6 months in any 12.

Very helpful advice, thankyou

Our car insurance has now decided that they won't extend our green card for more than 90 days (for any price) so we need to get temporary 2 months cover to finish our stay here.

We had insurance with Liberty Seguros for our UK registered car until we changed it to Spanish plates and we were given a year's cover even though we re-plated within that time.
Although I've never used them, Gran Alacant Insurances get a lot of good feedback and advertise on here so it may be worth contacting them.

Saga car insurance fully covers you for 12 months in Europe as standard on their policies.

I think legally under EU law the car is covered in the EU for the entirety of the policy, your insurer may only be willing to cover you fully for 90 days, after 90 days the policy drops down to "3rd party only" insurance.

If you're going back to the UK in December this will break up your stay and the 90 days will start again. As already stated the 90 day rule isn't really monitored.

I suggest that you have a look at the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain website and/or Jim's Guides on this site regarding current rules and regulations for EU citizens.   Also the N332 website for anything to do with driving in Spain.   The latter is run in conjunction with officers of the Guardia Civil for English speaking people and has an English language version of the Spanish equivalent of the Highway Code.

Saga insurance now states unlimited travel in the Eu, no mention even if UK leaves. Liberty Seguros will also insure a UK registered car with no time limit and it will appear to DVLA as insured allowing it to be taxed in the UK.
