At the moment, you can drive on your UK licence for 6 months or 30th April, whichever is the latest. This date had been extended over and again awaiting, hopefully, an agreement to be able to continue with a straighforward exchange of licences as we did pre-Brexit.
Expect some news just before...

... the end of April, even if it is just another extension.
Another vote for Spanish number plates.

Good morning. Wonder if you can help with this one?

If I bring my car over from the UK I'd need to insure it in Spain. Is there a problem getting this insurance?

You can assume I'll have gone through the process of completing all the necessary paperwork to import the vehicle.

No problem getting car insurance in Spain but it might be better to wait until your UK registered car is matriculated onto Spanish plates, as you would have to take out a new insurance policy once this happens. You current UK policy may be OK in the short term, check with your insurer. It may be possible that you could increase cover to include Europe for the rest of the policy term.

Than you. Most useful. I'll probably choose the option of insurance after matriculation. Again many thanks for your swift response.

Speak to your UK insurer to tell them that you are moving permanently to Spain as mine reduced the level of cover to 3rd party only immediately. Speak to Alfonso at http://www.granalacantinsurances.com/ . I had no problem getting Spanish insurance on my UK reg car and it was swapped over without any problems once I got Spanish plates.

Hello everyone. I would appreciate any advice/tips which would help in the task of importing my vehicle permanently into Dénia. I expect to be leaving in around six weeks' time.

How long can I drive on my UK licence before it becomes invalid and I have to begin the process of taking the Spanish driving test?...

...

I drove from Manchester to Dénia last October so am familiar the ferry service to Santander.

Can any one recommend someone in the UK to handle the necessary paperwork involved?

Any/all help would be much appreciated.

Tony

I used to bring a car from Ireland for the winters Tony up to Covid times. I was given a quote by Abbeygate insurance Spain to have it insured on Irish plates in Spain. Just over €420 for a Jeep. They just said I shouldn’t have in the country more than 6 months at a time which would’ve suited me fine except Covid got in the way.

We imported 2 cars from UK to Spain before we had Spanish licences ... but that was before Brexit kicked in, so things might have changed.

I also understand that the costs of importing has also gone up post-Brexit.

The costs of doing this have soared since brexit do not do it, if you have a car from uk and say in uk worth 10k  here same car maybe 15k because of price differrences  they charge you import duty and the cost to change is another 100o then when you sell you get nothing for it.  Do not do it it will bite your bum in the end.

The import tax is based on the cost of the car, mine was brand new, they have a a very large book with every car made included with the cost of import against the age year. Mine being new cost €3,500,my headlights had to be changed €360 each, ITV TEST €50, Engineers conformity test €60, company doing the transfer process €250, number plates etc….

Surprised at your comment of no problems driving RHD car Spain, we found it a real pain if driving solo on toll roads having to get out to insert credit card and automatic Parking barriers.

I wouldn’t have done it in retrospect.

Insurance no problem about the same as UK

Ps

Bring your original docs with you on the conformity of the car, we had problems importing a Toyota MR2 , the ITV staff looked in their instructions and it indicated the wheels should have been the next size up, whereas our booklet supplied with the car confirmed we had correct wheels, I had to go to Toyota dealers to get confirmation etc…

Thank you for your input which was very useful. My car is a low mileage Audi A4 2016 which I've owned for 4 years.

I have to agree with you regarding driving solo and toll booth ticket problem but otherwise I was fine.
