Hi. My husband and I, both retired, are looking for a holiday apartment and have seen one we like in Formentera del Segura.  Could I ask a few questions please to help us make a decision?

What are the amenities like in the village and are they within walking distance from most of the urbanisations?

What is the weather like in winter, i.e. November to March months?

Is there a good community mix of nationalities?

Are there golf courses nearby?

We have a little dog - are there dog-friendly places to walk her?

Are there things to do in the winter months?

And finally, are there good transport links?

Really appreciate any advice you can give and thank you.

Hi Debra,

Formentera del Segura is a typically Spanish village of less than 5,000 residents.  There are numerous bars and restaurants that cater for Spanish and foreigners alike.  The housing ranges from older style, single-storey bungalows to more modern townhouses.  On the north side of the road that runs through the centre of the village, there are a number of apartment complexes with a Dialprix supermarket and more bars.  The hub of the village is the church square, with the town hall alongside, a health centre, cultural centre, at least two banks (Sabadell and Caja Rural), pharmacy and several local shops.  The area called Los Palacios is also part of Formentera del Segura, although is equidistant to the larger town of Rojales.

In response to your specific questions:

What is the weather like in winter, i.e. November to March months?

-  January and February tend to be the coldest months, but in the 4 years we've lived here, the lowest temperatures have been 13C (day) and 3C (night), but these months tend to be drier, with most of the wet days typically occurring during April and October.

Is there a good community mix of nationalities?

-  The village centre is very Spanish, but there's a greater mix of nationalities in the urbs.

Are there golf courses nearby?

-  The nearest golf course would be La Marquesa in Rojales, about a 10 minute drive.

We have a little dog - are there dog-friendly places to walk her?

-  Loads!  You can walk many parts of the banks along the Segura river, but also the paths that run alongside the agricultural water canals.

Are there things to do in the winter months?

-  The urbs have a mix of residents and non-residents, so it is quieter in the winter, especially if you're relying on public transport.

And finally, are there good transport links?

-  Not really.  The village is on a bus route to Orihuela, but I don't know the regularity of the buses.  We have recently got our first, licenced taxi driver!  Denis (aka "Taxi No. 1") can be contacted on (00 34) 632 319 884 and [email protected].

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi, thank you for allowing me to join the forum. I am looking at an apartment in the Brisas Del Mar complex to purchase, but will need to wait a few weeks to visit as I live in Scotland. I am retired and would be grateful for any insight into the complex and village. I won’t be driving whilst staying for breaks winter and summer. Thank you for your support.

Hello

I am newish to this forum, but we did buy an apartment in Brisas Del Mar in September. We are very pleased so far (having had 2 visits out prior to lock down) and find it a very convenient place to live being so close to Dialprix supermarket and the bars. It is also an easy walk to the town square and other shops/banks.  The neighbours were really helpful when we had a plumber in and he needed to access the main stopcock (which is behind a locked door in the underground garage and a lovely Spanish man called Jesus holds the key to it). It seems like a friendly community and I can't wait to get back there!
