Hi my hubby and I are looking to purchase a holiday home and are open to areas we have not been back in the UK long as we were looking in September, we were going to go to Almoradi to vote an apartment but the estate agent we were with advised against the town. Do any of you know why that might have been.

We have an apartment in Villamartín and visit Almoradi quite often on Saturday market days. It seems to have a variety of shops and restaurants and an attractive little plaza - the street market I think is excellent, and I enjoy the authentic ‘Spanishness’

However, I’m not sure I would buy a place there, it being quite far from the coast and large shops and good restaurants. I’ve found I need to speak Spanish in the shops, which is ok as I’m learning. Im  not sure if there are many communities with international residents. It depends what you are looking for.

A  Car  would be  essential  as public transport  hit  and  miss. Some degree of Spanish will  help. Some good expat Community  but I  would  describe  it as mainly  a Spanish  town.   A  few nice  Pubs and Restaurants. But it  tends  to  get  quite   in cold months  more so if  living  nearer the  Coast.  Property  prices  cheaper  than around  Coastline.   But a  very  nice town

Rent  before you purchase  is  the  message  screaming 😱  at  people  who wish to purchase  and  use this form.  I  would  recommend  than you  do.

Best 👌  of   luck  in  your  search  of  a Home

Almoradi is one of the best municipalities in the area for bus services and has frequent and direct routes to many other  towns in the area.

It also has one of the best truly  Spanish markets in the area. The main square is beautiful, typical Spanish and lots of places to sit and people watch. The municipality doesn’t seem to suffer from the problems of some other municipalities in the area, such as poor roads and irregular rubbish collections.

If you are looking to have a holiday home in a town, then I personally wouldn’t  have a problem  with Almoradi.

Town life and urbanisation life in the province are exact opposites.  So it all depends on what you are looking for.

Main language heard in a town will be Spanish, so your knowledge of Spanish will need to be higher than  what is normally required in multi national urbanisation areas. Spanish hours are kept, so during siesta time, shops will be closed and the town will be extremely quiet, lots of town centres actually look abandoned during this time. Restaurants will operate to suit their Spanish diners, so expect to find  that bars/ restaurants  don’t open till 8pm at night. Your Spanish neighbours will be party animals who will party until  dawn. On the urbanisations, in the quieter months you’ll struggle to find a restaurant  serving food after 9.30.  Towns tend to be noisier than urbanisations as you are right in the middle of all the action! Rocket fire at 6 am, brass bands marching at 7am. Fireworks at midnight and fiesta parties that have loud music until around 5am. Yes you can hear  these things everywhere, but if you live in a town  you are closer to the source. Town properties tend to have slightly less outdoor space than on an urbanisation , but if  relaxing in the sun isn’t on your agenda then that shouldn’t be a problem

You would obviously still need a car to get around wherever you decide there’s so many little villages and gorgeous areas to visit , which are off the beaten track, but within easy driving distance.  Close to Almoradi is El Fondo nature reserve  it is only a few minutes drive away, teaming with wildlife, with lots of walks and a picnic area or two, yes you could use public transport, but after a couple of changes, it would probably take an eternity to travel 10km There are a number of excellent coach companies running day trips etc to see the local attractions, but unfortunately as they don’t pick up in Almoradi you still need to drive to get to your nearest pick up point (Algorfa?)

Choosing the right location is the most important thing when looking for a property.  So drive round looking at locations first. You get to discover the areas,   you get to discover bars, shops, parks, areas to go for walks. You get to see if places are too hilly, if they flood when it rains. You get the chance to sit and have a coffee , talk to people, find out if you could see yourself becoming a part of the community. Once you’ve fallen in love with a location, you’ll then find the right  property.

PS Almoradi has some gorgeous little cake shops!

I like Almoradi a bustling town, we viewed property there. However we preferred the laid back friendly atmosphere of the much smaller Formentera and never regretted our choice. It really is a matter of what you want, A car for us is a must as we love travelling around the area there is so much to see and do. Being 10 minutes from the coast is fine so it's not been a problem. For a larger town but still inland with easy coast and mountain access try Rojales or Benijofar, which is growing rapidly with lots of new builds going up.

I have lived in Almoradi for over 18 years.   It is a very Spanish town and has a number of supermarkets including Lidl, SuperDumbo, two Hiperber, Mercadona and Dia along with many smaller shops.   There is a lovely bus station but not many buses, lots of bars and restaurants and has been said the Saturday market is quite a large one, using several of the central streets, many squares with some that have cafeterias and/or play areas for the kiddies, a good health centre, a couple of accesses to the AP7 motorway, a Local Police station, a Guardia Civil police station.   There is also a sports centre, along with a newer one in the area of El Saladar.
