Walking dogs off lead

Hello.
Just arrived with my dog and staying for a couple of weeks - with him for the first time. I wondered whether there were any places or walking trails out of town where I could drive to and let him run off lead for some exercise? Appreciate any advice from dog owners. Thought about up into the hills behind the town.
