You can get pet transport company to bring your dog to Spain, cost around £1000

That is correct, pets are not allowed on public transport.

Hello

20years  ago I flew to Spain with my cat ,as I was coming to live here - it cost more for her airfare then, than it did for me! There was also another charge at Alicante airport to collect her  when the cargo hold had been unloaded . There were also vet visits & vaccinations etc required  in UK + paperwork ,to  make this possible.

From the UK there is only Lufthansa,KLM & TUI who fly small animals & I cannot imagine the charges. now.

I see you are still  'hoping  to rent an apt.'...before you book  anywhere for yourself , check out all the costs of bringing your dog & you might find it is extremely expensive.

Cheers

... public transport. Thanks Sian

The roads in Spain are quieter and in better condition than the roads in the UK and providing that you are in no hurry you could make the road trip an enjoyable part of your holiday.

I would recommend the direct ferry to Spain (Santander or Bilbao). Brittany ferries have pet friendly cabins were your dog could stay with you or in kennels were you could visit to walk you dog during the trip. There are many pet friendly hotels in Spain were you can break up your journey and the distance is about 500 miles from Northern Spain to Quesada.
