My wife and I are both 65. I was wondering whether we could benefit from discounted train travel if we buy the tarjeta dorada from Renfe as we do here in UK with the senior railcard.
But we are not permanently resident in Spain. Our NIE will show that.
Is it still possible in your experience ?

It is great to know we do not have to prove residency but only our age!
We might ant to travel to Valencia for tourism or the occasional pick up of friends and relative who can only fly to Valencia not Alicante.
This should reduce our train fares considerably, I hope !

In that case you should more than save the cost of the gold card with just one trip.
