I am Peter, nearly 81 years old. My wife & I have lived in Guardamar for 15 years. We have a corner apartment 3 floors up with a long balcony facing South & a small balcony facing West opposite the bus station. I am a volunteer at the La Mata Natural Park. When it is cooler I try to walk from the Visitor Centre at 10am to the canal El Acequión, then along the bridle path to the bird hide nearest the island. Continuing along the bridle path to the picnic site, I then return along the cemetery road to the Visitor Centre at 1pm. I would welcome anyone to accompany me and my route is flexible. Please bring water, plus binoculars & telescope if possible. I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm for this natural park. Yours sincerely, Peter

I too love the La Mata national park and walked much the same route when I was out last February.  How frequently are you there?  I would love to join you when it’s cooler.

We too walk at La Mata. When we come out to our holiday home in El Raso, next  may  we get in touch and walk with you?

We are due in September, and then in November.  But it all depends on how we feel about the travelling.

Thank you for Sharing the details of your walk, and I hope you continue to enjoy the walks and keep safe.

Hi cp, I usually drive from Guardamar bus station  about 9:45am every Thursday when its a bit cooler. I am the first registered President for the Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal although the organisation existed a few years before I joined. Over the years the 'volunteers'  have collected litter, helped to erect signs, monitor nesting Shelduck etc. It is up to us what we contribute; I am a very bad bird watcher,  but I am aware that many of the local birds migrate internationally, or between the mountains & the wetlands. In 2013 August 22nd I was surprised to see so many waders, grebe, ducks plus an Osprey, probably migrating to Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. At present there are ground nesting Black Winged Stilt that do not like visitors in the bird hide or viewing tower. They circle around emitting alarm calls even when I am locked in the bird hide.  That's all for now, Peter

Hi Myrtle, The La Mata Natural Park Visitor Centre is just off the N332 at La Mata.  If you are driving Northwards you can see the little bungalow, white walled with a red roof, from the N332 a few km before you get there. At La Mata roundabout, go to the 3rd exit taking the small road signed to the Cemetery and enter the carpark to the right. The centre is open from 9am to 2pm (1pm Sat & Sun) and it is my intention to be there every Thursday at 10am.  Just ask for the 'voluntario' Peter. Just turn up, no need to make an appointment, but the official telephone number is 965 72 16 50

Here, Here.

Peter,

You are a wonderful gentleman and it is lovely to read that you are happily doing good work and willing to share your knowledge of the area.

My husband might join you in September. Like you, he is a lover of wildlife and enjoys a good walk.

Best wishes and keep on enjoying your life in the sun.

Grannyrose.
