Whilst applying for residency from the UK has anyone had their passport kept by the Spanish Consulate in London and could be possibly held for upto 3 months?

Is it normal?

Yes, it's normal but they will allow you to keep it if you are going to use it. Normally nowhere near as long as 3 months but they will let you have it back should you have a trip planned.
