We also fell for the "you have to be on the Padron to buy a car" urban myth. I would say that the disdain with which the salesman at the dealership chucked it back at me, suggests that he's seen a lot of unrequired Padron certificates! ;o)

Interesting .... our Spanish Solicitor/gestor/insurance brokerage gave us the padron story. The rationale was that you need to prove where you live to register the car. You could buy a house, then sell it, but retain a copy of the deeds. Only the padron is up-to-date.
With hindsight, I am unconvinced.
Anyway ... the Spanish car that we planned to buy fell through. So we bought a UK-plated LHD in England and imported it to Spain. Having done the padron earlier than necessary, the import entailed tax ! But the car was of little value, so the tax was small.
