Hi forum,

Me and my family have been discussing moving to Spain in a couple of years. We want to "try it" either this or next summer, so we'll be looking for a place to rent first.

I'm feeling a bit ambivalent of the which area (south Spain, so basically Costa BlancaCosta Del Sol and so on) we should go to though. And I feel it's time to take help from people who actually knows their way around these areas and have been to numerous cities.

I want to be clear first, with what it is we're looking for. South Spain is a must, it has to be "warm" all year around with 300+ sun days. That itself is a requirement that tons of cities will fulfill, but here's where it gets harder;

I want the town to feel authentic, and Spanish - I want it to be lively even in winters, and as little tourists as possible. I want to be able to eat real Spanish and GOOD food and I do NOT want to be in a town where all menus are in my own language serving my own type of food.

Now, before you shoot me down here I am well aware that what I am asking is virtually impossible looking at the south coast of spain. But it's not all black and white right? To illustrate a bit further of what I am looking for - I have been to one town in South of Spain - namely Torrevieja. This was hands down - one of the worst experiences I've ever had. I was devastated about how bad everything was there, not even one restaurant served decent food - and it felt like a ghost town in some areas. So, to sum it up - I am looking for the *opposite* of Torrevieja.

So, I started asking around - and here's where it got confusing. A colleague of mine said to me "What you're looking for is a town called Altea - it's a hidden gem" - I googled around, seemed pretty nice and then months later I discussed the very same topic with another dear friend of mine which I know have been around the area a lot. So I asked him about Altea, which I had been recommended.

His response? Well, he said big no no to Altea, and instead pointed me towards a town called Javea (Xabia) which he said really is as "real spain" you can find if we're narrowed down to just look at the south coast.

I googled around about Javea and could find some reviews confirming what he said, that it was really a hidden gem. But lately, I've been finding more and more posts that Javea is not all that hidden and that it's been exploited by tourists for quite some time.

So, back to square 1 I guess. As mentioned, now I am going to take help from the Forum to push me in the right direction. I hope I am picturing what kind of town we're looking for - I don't mind if it's small, as long as it feels somewhat Authentic, and it's not overly exploited. Was Altea and Javea good recommendations, or would you say there are towns that better suit our needs? If so, what towns would you recommend?

Thank you for taking the time and reading this post.

Costa Blanca is not the South of Spain. It is Eastern Spain and is predominantly Murcia and Valencia Communities. Malaga and the Costa Del Sol area is around a 5 hr drive away

Javea etc are further still and you are creeping into North Eastern Spain with those locations

I always say this, forget online research as you will get 1001 different opinions which will confuse you more.  Fly over here and research the areas in person

I think you'll have to compromise. The 300+ sun days isn't a problem, but in winter, even when the sky is clear, it's decidedly chilly out of the sun - especially indoors. Every winter we get down to zero degrees on at least one occasion.

If you want lively, then some of the coastal strip areas would do that for you, but that's where most of the 'furriners' congregate, so you won't get authentic, and there are a lot of holiday homes which are vacant much of the year.

Alicante might meet some of your needs, but it's full of visitors in summer, especially in August.

I suggest you consider looking inland. For example, Almoradi is nice, has most of the facilities anyone would want, the town hall lay on regular events in the theatre etc, and there are plenty of good Spanish restaurants either in town or a few minutes drive away.

You sound similiar to us, ideally we wanted Gran Canaria in reality that’s the only place you will get good weather all year round, but we didn’t want a mortgage on our holiday home so we looked mainland, our compromise is there are a couple of cold months a year but still nicer than U.K.

We spent our first Xmas in our villa and although during the day the doors where open as it creeped towards 4pm it became very cold. Not unbearable but slippers needed and heaters on.

As for the area, we did not want to live in Blackpool in the sun. We felt the same to be honest about most of the costal areas we went from Valencia to Murcia spending lots of time in and around the areas.

We wanted spanish restaurants, a mix or community with a majority of spanish. We found such a place slightly inland. I know you where asking for towns but we couldn’t find a town that had the blend of good food, good mix of people and a feel of spain with the property and community types we wanted.

We stumbled on a place called Relleu, we did a google street view tour and we really liked it, we then went on to YouTube and couldn’t believe all the spanish fiestas they have and how lovely it looked, we then booked to spend 4 nights in the village. It offered us EVERYTHING we wanted, we looked at about 15 properties for sale and then came across a bank repossession which we ended up buying and four weeks later we picked up the keys.

We have been out three times so far and it’s is for us perfect. We bought in a small but upmarket urbanisation called Cassas Mediterraneas. Which is gated but had a good mix of year round residents and holiday homes. It has a beautiful palm tree lined pool and views that make your TV redundant.

The village has all the basic amenities you could watch but is stunning and you could get lost for hours just wandering.

What is amazing is there are still a couple of new 3-4 bed places for around €85,000 (they will probably take €80,000.

We are 18 mins drive from the beach, and 20 mins drive from the big towns like finestrat or 25 from Benidorm form the airport we are 45-55 mins.

The trade off is you can’t walk to the beach but to be honest we never found a place we liked from Valencia to Murcia that fitted the bill, it was all too British or 1970s tatty, graffiti covered urbanisations, with dog muck under step. I’m not saying we checked every town but we did 1,000s of kms and spent a long time finding the right place or is it the right feel?

Our place is safe, clean and feels like we are in Spain and the walk to the bakery every morning to get our fresh bread from the spanish village baker is wonderful with the noises, warmth and smells of this beautiful spanish gem.

I am biased I’ve bought there but have not regretted it.

Hi, I know how difficult it is to go somewhere totally alien to you where you will find the perfect place. Me and my hubby came to spain several times and drove to every town and village we thought looked promising as we were after buying a villa. Like you we didn't want it touristy but as we speak little Spanish we wanted to be near enough English speaking (doctors, dentist, vets etc) in case we needed it. We have now bought a villa in a town called Campoverde, in Torre de la horrada. There are two parts to the town, the first part is all new villas and houses, with British bars and restaurants. Don't get me wrong, these are great to visit sometimes and in the summer you can sit in any of the bars and watch the sun go down. There is a new Iceland store that stocks mainly British food ( probably not what you're looking for but handy for those items you miss from home) and a large Chinese store that sells everything and is run by very friendly staff. The other end of town, the old part is probably more what you're looking for. It is a jumble of old original villas and houses, all different and unique. There is a main strip of restaurants that are a mix of Spanish, German , some English , bars, a newsagents , hairdressers and a wonderful doctors surgery, all Spanish but English speaking. There isn't a great deal to do here apart from chill out! No discos (tho some karaoke), nothing really for younger people and you will find the age here is probably 40+? So you don't get rampaging hordes as there's nothing for them to rampage to! It does get busier in the summer but it doesn't get overrun and in the winter everything stays open as it's a working town, not a holiday one. We are approx 20 mins from the main town and numerous other interesting towns. We are in the process of moving our belongings out there as I write this and we're hoping to be permanently settled there by march. Our Spanish builder told us it stays around the 75 mark in the winter and only January and February get cold. I happily walk my dog around the streets at night on my own as it feels so safe and you don't really hear of any major trouble. I could keep writing but I won't bore you any more! If you would like to know more feel free to message me. Hope this helps anyway.
