Hello. I asked a question on the Santa Pola forum and got some very helpful feedback and I hope  those of you who were in a similar position can help me as well.

I am coming over in October to spend time in certain areas I think would be suitable,  then starting to look at properties once I know the areas.

From a visit many many years ago I think Santa Pola is my preferred area but I don't want to discount others if I get feedback I hadn't thought of.

I am ok with being in an urbanisation about couple of Kms outside a town if there is a regular urban bus to town, commercial centre and beach (did that for 20 years in the Malaga region)

Santa Pola seems to suit me as not so touristy in off season, working town and good bus links to the airport. Plus smaller traditional bars where I can have a Cana or two and can practice my bad Spanish.

My biggest concern is as a single guy coming up to 60 there won't be a big enough social circle in Santa Pola for someone who will be non resident spending 6 14 day breaks there.

I have thought about La Marina as it seems to be more low rise buildings and most have either a private or community pool.

Any thoughts as to why you chose la Marina over the other two would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Paul

GRAN ALICANT WOULD SUIT YOU DOWN TO THE GROUND. NEAR TO ALICANTE TOWN AND IS AN UP AND COMMING PLACE.

Pools are usually only bearable from Late May to early October unless heated which isn’t common.

Santa Pola is lovely.

La Marina is residential with lots of English ( expats)   Not sure it has a good bus service or a bus service at all.   Probably meet lots of people in bars regardless of how long you stay.

What about La Mata?  It’s a beautiful place.

I'm still favouring Santa Pola and staying there to use as a base.

La Mata is too far away from the airport as I'm going to try and not have a car with a max 30 bus ride airport to town.

Hi flyer12. Where did you decide on in the end?

We are in Santa Pola and of a similar age.

Haven't been able to travel to Spain yet so not made up my mind. But the more research I do the more it will be either Gran Alacant or Santa Pola should I decide on the Alicante area.

I owned a property in Nerja for almost 20 years so the Costa Del Sol has a big pull back there especially if I go somewhere with a train station.

My advice is to make a list of the most important requirements you want eg

1. Bus service

2. English speaking people but perhaps you speak Spanish

3 everything within walking distance

4. Places to meet people

5.etc, etc,etc.

I think you should check out the U3A.  There’s one in Torrevieja.  Being a single person puts a different complexion on holiday life. If you take a drink, a pub would seem the obvious place to strike up a conversation. Many, many people would advise you to rent and I’m thinking this has to be the wisest move for you   Do you drive?  Having a car makes you independent and allows you to travel around all the coast searching for your perfect location. Another thought is a dog!  People with dogs gravitate towards one another and others stop to admire the animal and engage in conversation. This may not help if you don’t plan to live permanently in Spain but may help later on when you retire.

If I was single, I’d probably look at expat areas. That way you are guaranteed to find someone to talk with. We’re on the north side of Torrevieja with not so many English/ Irish people permanently living there. Most of our friends are Scandinavian.

I think La Marina has many German people. Gran Alacant is very good, 10 minutes from the airport. Santa Pola and Alicante not far with bus No 3. Gran Alacant is not so empty as some Santa Pola district even in September like Playa Lisa or Tamarit.

We chose La marina because it is close to the airport and the beach and if you don't want to drive there are 6 supermarkets on the Urbanitzación, also lots of restaurants and a good expat community. If you prefer the real Spain just go into La Marina village. Been here 5 years now no regrets.
