I had a few spare minutes so I decided to do a check on the courtesy of members who ask questions.

I'm pleased to say that the majority (72% of a sample of 123) either said thanks and/or clicked on This is helpful.

I'm sad to say that 28% of those asking questions didn't even respond, let alone say thanks or click the button.

I'm always willing to try and help, but I'm not going to waste time trying to help people who in my opinion are deficient in good manners, so I've created for myself a personal black list.

I'm definitely not trying to deter people from posting questions, but please, please, at least acknowledge any help you are offered.

Rant over!

Thanks to both responders.

Pete - I totally agree with what you say. I think possibly (hopefully?) the reason people don't know that a question has already been posed and answered is that the forum search facility can be confusing.

I've said previously that search requires you to enter a sub-forum for that search. Originally, I was using Google search and confining the search to this site, but then I found out by trial and error that if you just enter 'a' in the location box, you can do a global search of the forum. Most people won't know that.

Hopefully Jan or Alex may take note, and add 'All the forum' to the list of drop-down locations in the search facility.

If not, I'll post my suggestions in the Your suggestions... sub-forum at some point.

I will always try to help if I can and whatever the circumstances manners cost nothing.

Myself and Jan are always appreciative of everyone's help on this website, we still can't believe the amount of fantastic help and advice that is given in this relatively short time this website has been around! Thank you Jim and Pete especially for all of your help and advice.

Our website is constantly being updated and improved as much as we can do, and we've now updated it with your suggestions for the search so you can easily search the whole website, not just a specific area. Simply type in "All the forum" or "Everywhere" into the location field when searching and hopefully that should work.

Please let us know if there's anything else we can improve!

A big thank you to Jim, Pete, Jan & Alex, I'd say, and 'hear hear' to everything you've said!

Geoff.

Totally agree with you Jim and Pete. Sometimes you can spend a fair amount of time on a comprehensive reply, checking for grammar as well after. Yet some posters won't spend 30 seconds saying thank you.  Manners make the the man.

I have just read this post again, Sorry Jim, but unfortunately this is 2017, long gone are the days when people said thankyou / thanks. Could be worse, I have seen posts on other forums where people ask a question or try to post genuine advice only for people to take the P.

Syd

I think WAS called manners.
