Hi Ian,
I live on the outskirts of Los Palacios (Formentera del Segura) and can walk to the centre of Daya Vieja in 15 minutes. I really like the village, which has a few bars, some which serve food, a social centre, bread shop, cash point and a swimming pool complex. For what appears to be a typically Spanish village, there's quite a large number of Brits living there. Many belong to local groups, such as petanque and padel, and a good place to meet them is at Kiosko Bar Raquel, in the centre of the village, overlooking the park. If you like walking or cycling, you have easy access to the quiet country lanes around the village and to the tracks on the Segura river where you can go down to Guardamar if you want. In the other direction, I've only been as far as Algorfa, but I'm sure you could go much further along the river.
You will need some form of transport to do food shopping, with the closest supermarkets in Formentera or Benimar, on the outskirts of Rojales.
Come for a visit, sit at Raquel's with a drink and you'll soon be chatting to locals. It's a good way to get a feel for the place.
Kind regards,
Kim
