Having recently moved to Spain in January I have been surprised that dogs are not welcomed in bars and restaurants.  We have come from a small market town in Wales where we were able to take our well behaved dog into any bar or restaurant, and even travelling through France she was welcomed into these establishments. Our dog is elderly and  becomes anxious when left which means during winter months it has been difficult to enjoy an evening meal or drink out. We are currently travelling back from  a visit to  Wales and had a stop over in a Spanish town to find we were unable to take her anywhere for an evening meal ( it was too cold to eat outside). I'm not complaining and accept that living in another country means you accept their ways but just wondered if this is a common theme throughout Spain and if indeed this attitude is likely to be changing?

it's actually law in Spain that where food is being served dogs are not allowed in.

If there is an outside terrace some places will be happy to serve you.

Is it likely to change? No.

I know dog owners love their pooches but I certainly don't want dogs near me when I'm having a nice meal.

I have two dogs and I have never had any problems being welcomed on restaurant terraces, even having water supplied for them, but I wouldn't dream of taking them inside, however well behaved they may be. Not everyone likes dogs and some will have allergies and much as we love the smell of our dogs, others may not.
I don't really want to be sat eating my meal while a dog decides to have an intimate cleaning session!

Well behaved or not, it’s a dog. I could say a lot more but can’t be bothered, I’m glad some countries have these rules. Such rules are there for a reason, but unfortunately in the UK many pubs, inns, restaurants are making big money by advertising doggy friendly. I just go to and stay in establishments which say no dogs allowed. It’s an individual choice I have to make, those with dogs need to make the same choice and accept it.

Best hope a blind person with their dog does not sit next to you then, or a deaf person with their hearing assisted dog, or a disabled person with their assistance dog.  It is such a shame that people will take all kinds of assistance from these wonderful animals such as police dogs, drug sniffer dogs, gun sniffer dogs, people lost in snow/other terrains found by search dogs, water rescue dogs, but god forbid one of our fur babies sits with us and you have a canary fit.
