Lidl is also a good option, and Alcampo was awarded "cheapest supersroe" by the local consumer assn. in Murcia. So look around and take your time. Spain is different and that includes consumer behavior and shopping habits. You will like Iceland in Torrevieja and San Javier..

Fruit and veg is more expensive than UK and the quality is not as good ,mercadonia is our choice .

I usually shop in ,Aldi , sometimes Lidl, Cinsum for a few things, the UK type shop for a few things and the market for most fruit and veg. I always try to buy Spanish as it is better value and I want to support Spanish businesses, and shop in season for fruit and veg.

You have to be shopping savvy,Aldi and Lidl are the cheapest and are good quality,Consum and Mercadonna have varying price differences ,Carrefour is probably the most expensive ,all are more expensive for foodstuffs than the UK but that is life .

I think I’d have to disagree about prices being more expensive than UK.Lidl and Aldi just that little bit cheaper than Mercadona but I can’t think of anything that costs more in Spain than the UK.

1 example cabbage Mercadonna €3 UK ,Tesco and Lidl £1.25,carrots Mercadonna €1.50,UK € 40p,and so it goes on.

For anyone interested enough to look, there’s lots of price comparisons available. The U.K. is usually  in the more expensive half of Europe (below Ireland, unfortunately for me), consistently a few places more expensive than Spain in terms of price indexes.

I’m not sure how you are making your comparisons. I find Spain cheaper than Ireland, and this is supported by any actual data I have seen. I don’t shop in GB, but the comparison data are more reliable than one person’s experience.

Don’t forget the prices in the Spanish supermarkets for veg and fruit are per kilo, the UK prices are per pack.In Lidl and Aldi UK the will have the price per kilo in small print on the shelf price sticker.I will concede that cornflakes in Lidl and Aldi Spain are probably twice the price of UK.I guess this is because cornflakes in the UK is a very important price indicator because of their popularity.
