I have just been told that you need to renew your Padron every 3 months, is this correct?

No.

On occasion you may be asked for proof of your padron for which can get a new certificate from your town hall and it's that which is only valid for 3 months.

If you haven't had to do that for a while (years) it's not a bad idea to pop down to your town hall and let them know that you are still there.

My renewal time is every 5 years if I'm in the same property. If you are asked to produce your padron i.e. if buying something or for banking etc then it usually has to be no older than 3 months.
