Retaining UK Bank Account

Yes, we have kept Nationwide and Lloyds, both with debit and credit cards.

I retained my bank account with Intelligent Finance (part of Lloyds).  I own property in the UK as well as Spain, but because I live permanently in Spain, they insisted on having my Spanish address as my primary contact details, which was fine by me.

Any bank may query your expat status, i.e. your place of residence, because they are at the forefront of adminstering anti-tax fraud regulations.  When the EU rolled out FATCA regulations in 2015, most European countries made their banking industry responsible for collating the required data, e.g. my UK bank asked for my Spanish address and Tax Identification Number, and my Spanish bank asked for my UK address and National Insurance number.  Nothing untoward - except for those avoiding tax!  :o)

I assume you have a Spanish bank acct

Is it easier to have funds transferred direct to it or via your UK Acct i e do charges come into play

So I take it all your funds are channeled through Transfer wise to your Sabadell Acct? 

Presently my wife and myself are with Sabadell after they took over Cam, but as usual they have introduced charges of 35 euros every quarter which is quite hefty

So I have opened an Acct with Bankinter

with little or no charges
