Hi I have an account with N26. Free banking, Spanish IBAN, you can set up direct debits, standing orders etc. they issue a debit card. You can use some ATMs for free which you can look for on the ATM locator on the N26 APP. I transfer funds from the Uk with Foremost Currency Group for free and th...

Hi Jan1961

Did they send your card to your UK address as I have heard some have had to have the card sent to their Spanish address.

If you own a 2nd property in Spain but are a UK tax resident, I would suggest getting it sent to the Spanish address. This is because of what they say on their website as it suggests you should be a resident based on my reading of it:

------

How do I open an N26 bank account?

You can open a N26 account if you’re at least 18 years old, living in one of these countries, and own a compatible smartphone. To start the sign-up, simply create an account in the N26 app or on the N26 website and confirm your email address. You can then introduce yourself with your ID directly in the app and then pair your smartphone with your account.

and also:

How do I get a Spanish IBAN?

If you're a resident of Spain and meet the requirements of opening an N26 bank account, you will be assigned an IBAN starting with ES when you successfully complete the signup process.

------

It is not clear to me whether they would expect you to have a Spanish mobile number to complete the process or whether you can have a UK one. It is probably another case of needing someone to go through the process and feedback accordingly.

I had my card sent to my Spanish address as I am resident here. Not sure whether they will send it to the Uk.

I don’t know but I know you can’t have a Spanish IBAN with Revolut. I think it is Lithuanian. I would imagine there will be charges but I don’t really know.

I would recommend just having the N26 account if you are in Spain or transferring funds to Spain. I guess it depends on your circumstances.

Is it possible to open a bank in Spain as a non resident?    Regards

Patrick

You can but its not necessary and expensive. I was led to believe it was a requirment when I bought my property but it isn't and have now closed it. I couldn't open an N26 account becasue they would not accept an application from a UK resident. I guess I could have lied and given my Spanish address but I decided against it. Starling was the next option but the GB IBAN was not accepted by all my suppliers. Moved to Transferwise and has been faultless.

I have had a Sabadell account since buying my place in Spain in 2016 and im still non resident. As people have said, they charge 35euro a quarter. As someone else has also mentioned, there us the N26 account, which in it's basic form, doesn't have any charges. I've actually opened one of these accounts a few months ago and I'm very impressed so far. My needs from my bank are small - paying community fees, SUMA, direct debits, and transferring money from the UK (I use XE for that and they are great). So if you dont need to visit a branch and are happy with a totally online bank, I can recommend N26. Its pretty easy to set up and the app is nice and simple to use and because of all this, I shall soon be closing my Sabadell account and saving myself 140euro a year.

Absolutely Paul I couldn’t agree more. Initially I was a bit worried about having an online account without the ‘safety’ of having a bank branch to go to, but like you I am very impressed and would urge folk to have a look and save some money.
