For those interested in Monovar, 'A Place in the Sun' has the town and some places featured on Monday 10th August at 4 pm UK time on Channel 4.

You are welcome Jilmb,

Pity it didn't show more of the town but I understand that Laura on the same programme did another according to some (estate agent) friends out there. Will post when I hear.

Best wishes,

D&J

Hello, we are looking at properties in monovar to start as a holiday home then move permanently after 5yrs. Is this mainly an urban area? Seems limited information online. Do holiday makers rent villas here and what is life like as an expat who’s wants to join in with Spanish locals?

We've owned our place in the centre for 14 years and had many great holidays and made a lot of Spanish friends, there are some great country properties but we love being in town and able to walk to the bars and cafes, we've spent the last two years there but had to come back to the Uk last week as our tenants left our house here in a right state. You really do have to speak some Spanish, you don't have to be fluent but you do need the basics, public transport is poor, there's a bus to Elda where you can get a train to Alicante but that's the only bus route out of town, having said that we love the place and can't wait to get back.

Monovar is typically more Spanish than the coast, but very friendly. Its a lovely town with lots of history, but  not many expats here in comparison to say Pinoso. The language is Valenciano but most will speak Spanish too but not much English to be found.

Not a place for holiday renters really either,
