Due to current covid climate I don’t want to book tickets in advance but how easy is it for me to get on a train from Alicante to Valencia on the day and buy at station

Consider waiting times and surcharges for buying at the station. People of 60 and older are entitled to benefit from a 40% discount provided they buy a "tajeta dorada" for 6,- valid for one year. Smart tickets "RENFE y tu" can be loaded at ticket machines hassle free and comfortable.
