Good afternoon

Can anyone advise if there is a delay in the process of exchanging your UK driving licence for the Spanish one.

It's been over 2 months since the abagados submitted my application to the DGT

Many thanks

John k.

It has been the holiday season and most places either close or go to minimum manning in August.

If it has been registered for exchange then you can check the progress at this site

Many thanks for getting back to me.Yeah I get its August etc but it's been going on since 22 June 2023..Ex pat serv have given me next to no info other than their man is picking some up on Monday of whatever week. But not ever mine..I don't even have the provisional so I am stuck without the ability to drive anything.

Your link is saying I haven't imput my NIE in the right format..which is extremely baffling as well there only one way..I soldier on and  maybe someone on here is going fthrough the same delay.

Thanks again

The temporary licence  used to be valid for a period of three months, but due a backlog a few months ago the temporary licence was being issued  for a period of 6 months ,  I think there’s a bit of a clue for you as to how long they are taking.to come through.

When we exchanged many years ago. I got mine after 7 weeks, hubby got his after 11 weeks, but his appointment at the DGT was 10 minutes before me, with the same clerk.  Hubby has been waiting for a straight forward renewal since beginning of June - his temp licence is valid till sometime in  December we’re not really expecting the new licence until October at the earliest.  As  Marcliff advised, absolutely nothing gets processed in August.  Even post gets delayed whilst your postman is off on his holidays.

Thanks for your reply Lynn..yeah I appreciate how slow things move in August..the problem I've got is I've used an abagado and whilst I have been given a stamped receipt acknowledging they have my UK licence I haven't even been issued a temporary/provisional one..which going by what you say if I had gone in personally I would have received the provisional/temporary there and then ..right now I can't drive at all.

I was told that I would receive the provisional in 2 weeks and the real one in 6 ..I have neither..but they've got my cash ..quick for that..thanks for your reply.jk

Forget anything about a 'provisional' as no such thing exists in the Spanish system.

Unless the process has changed since 2018 AFAIK a successful submission should automatically produce a temporary permit.

What we got was a piece of paper valid for 3 months which we had to get renewals for as our licences did not turn up within the that 3 month period.

If you're in the system (marcliffs link) then there is no reason to not be allowed to drive whilst waiting and I'd be having a stern word with the abogado. Some (many) of them are just money grabbing shysters who take advantage of people who don't know how things are supposed to work and are all to easily fobbed off by lies or BS.
