Hello. My wife and I are purchasing an apartment in Orihuela Costa and are moving in September. We intend to spend several months a year and are importing one of our cars. Both of us don't speak any Spanish and it is a worry if our car were to break down. Is there an agency similar to the AA or RAC that is available where there is an option to speak in English. On this subject, our car is 8 years old, does anyone have any rough idea as to how much it would cost to import. I have included the age of the car as I think that it has some bearing on import taxes. Thank you.

If the car is on UK insurance, then you need to get European breakdown cover added to the policy, or buy that separately. Vehicle insurance in Spain includes this. In the event of a breakdown, you call the insurance company and they send a grua to recover the vehicle to a garage of your choice.

If you want roadside assistance, then you need to look at:

https://www.racc.es/home

To get a price for putting a vehicle on Spanish plates, then ask Leigh at:

If, as you say, you will use your UK reg. car in Spain only occasionally during some months (not more than 6 consecutive months per year or 180 days in total) you do not need to import it. Do not register as a Resident at the municipal "Padron Municipal". And even, in case of setting up your permanent residence in Spain, you have 6 months to change plates. Then, no taxes apply. All you need is a COC (from the manufacturer), a "Certificdo de Carcteristicas Tecnicas" issued by any Spanish ITV for some 90,- and proof of ownership. Total cost should not exceed 250,- (incl. embossing license plates) if you do it on your own (let me know and I tell you how), let a "gestoria" do it and pay additional 300,- or more.
