OK, so I'm doing some research ,I've always wanted to retire in Spain and think the Orihuella area perfect . I have enough money to live modestly.  As I will be a post Brexit retiree I could not afford to return to the UK for treatment. (charges being 150 x nhs actual treatment costs!) So how do you go about making sure you have help etc. and end of life care????

Just want to make sure I cover all the bases here! I do not have any family to help.

If you are a UK retiree and have the S1 healthcare cover then you are still covered for healthcare in the UK if you can afford the airfare etc.

If you fall seriously ill in Spain then the healthcare is excellent while you are in hospital. At the end of your hospital treatment and discharge you will need to arrange your own healthcare requirements such as visits from carers etc ( which are expensive) as you don't get free aftercare cover. You will need to pay for some prescriptions too.

End of life help will have to be paid for by selling everything and moving into a home or moving back to the UK.

I will not have an S1 as I will be retiring early. I think you need to be 67 to get the S1 while still in the UK

You can apply for the S1 healthcare cover at retirement age and drawing your UK old age pension. The UK agreed to carry on with that arrangement.

However....you do realise that you need to apply for a non lucrative visa to retire to Spain?

You need to apply for a non lucrative visa from the Spanish consulate while you are still living in the UK. You will need to meet the income and healthcare requirements. If you gain the visa you can then move to Spain and apply for residency.

Yes I do understand that and do meet the requirements but while doing research to see if this really is doable for me I realised I had not taken into account that I want to move before I retire and the ins and outs of the S1 and end of life care.

I had not realised you can not get and S1 till you draw your pension in the UK Just asking questions to see if there are ways around it. But I'm not finding any.

You can apply for the S1 healthcare cover if you are registered for certain disabilities or claiming some benefits. I couldn't tell you which benefits or disabilities but the overseas healthcare team in Newcastle UK can if you contact them. Since Brexit the list would have been reduced. Please ask if you have any more questions.

Good luck

Another expense to consider is the cost of any medication that you may require in your elderly years. If you don't have the S1 cover then you will pay full price for any prescription meds or equipment. Private healthcare does not cover the cost of medication either.

The average cost of home carers to do a home visit for an hour is around €15. So a week of 2 visits per day is €210 per week.

Something to consider.

Yes. You can do 90 days in every rolling 180 days.
