Hi, we registered out S1 approx 2 years ago and were issued permanent SIP cards. We have applied to UK for GHIC cards and they say they they can see we were issued S1 but not that we have registered it. Does anybody know who we can contact to chase this up and request they update the records so that  UK to be able to see the S1 was registered.

Thank you 🥴

If you area a permanent resident then you get an EHIC not a GHIC. The EHIC is valid for anyone with an S1.

Your S1 is registered with the INSS in your area so try contacting them for proof of registration.

Our EHIC applications were sent with the advice of pension when we received them.

Hi, thank you for your reply, sorry I meant EHIC. I will get in touch with Torrevjka INSS for proof.

Thanks again 😊

I thought the EHIC has now been replaced with the GHIC. Your EHIC is valid until it expires then will be replaced with a GHIC. Any new applications will be for a GHIC.

The EHIC is still available in certain circumstances:

Some people can apply for a new UK EHIC that they can use in Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, as well as in EU countries.

People who can apply for the new card include:

  • nationals from the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland who started living in the UK before 1 January 2021, and their families
  • some British State Pensioners who started living in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland before 1 January 2021, and their families
  • UK students who started living and studying in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland before 1 January 2021

S1 recipients  and students get the EHIC. For travel the GHIC gets issued.

If you read the link embedded in my previous message to you,  the EHIC is still available to those who satisfy the following criteria:

  • nationals from the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland who started living in the UK before 1 January 2021, and their families
  • some British State Pensioners who started living in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland before 1 January 2021, and their families
  • UK students who started living and studying in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland before 1 January 2021
For example, I still hold and will be able to hold, a EHIC as I receive UK State Pension and I have been living in Spain (EU) before 1 January 2021.

So why does the post I made say your EHIC is valid until the expiry date then will be a GHIC?
