Ah, is it an external paint finish? If so does it cover where old paint has peeled (after prep obviously)?
Thanks -
More like plaster than paint, but comes in different colours

For belt and braces I'd add some algicide (copper sulphate usually) as well as the shock.
You can use flocculante at the same time as shock and algicide.
If you've not used it before, flocculante comes in the form of tablets or liquid. I prefer the tablets. Put them in the skimmer bucket and keep the circ running until the tablets have dissolved and the water has cleared. The flocculante makes the sand particles in your filter sticky. Small stuff which would normally pass straight through the sand then sticks in the filter. Once the water's sparkling again, do a backwash to get rid of the dead algae.
If you use liquid flocculante, you end up with all the dead algae on the bottom of the pool, and you then have to vacuum it away.
