Can anyone give recommendations of where to buy travel insurance. Any ideas on cost for a couple, one over 65, and one over 70? We always had free insurance with our Lloyds account, so haven't had to purchase this before. Thanks

Sheila, I do a comparison thing on the internet to try find a good price as they can vary a lot.

Thanks for the tip. Can you tell me the name of a comparison website. I live here full time and want to holiday in the Canary Islands, so presumably would have to go for an insurer here in Spain.

Just type in “ compare travel insurance”. That usually works for me.

Hi, I have always used Mapfre, we are both 74 years of age.  It has not been too expensive.  We have just been away for ten days to Majorca, cost of insurance about 68 euros [did not cover health as we had private insurance for that] just covered hotel bills and getting us home if ill or dead.   My husband was hospitalised for 11 days in intensive care and I had to extend the holiday for another ten days.  Mapfre are paying ten nights in a hotel at 100 euros a night and the taxi transfer to change from Alcudia where I was staying to Palma.  So, the money was well spent.  Would recommend them, but remember, this insurance price was not covering health insurance it would be more expensive if you included that.  However, there was no problem when I telephoned them and told them what had happened.  They just told me to pay up front, keep all receipts and that I was covered.  Good luck, would recommend them to you, it has paid off for us.

Thanks very much Andrea, that is very helpful. Best wishes to you both and I hope that your husband is recovered now. I hope you enjoyed Alcudia, it has been our favourite place for many years.

We used AXA online last year for holiday insurance - covered health/luggage etc. Form easy to complete and immediate cover, not that expensive , around 50/60 eu I think.

I tried to obtain it through our insurance broker, who informed me that most Spanish companies take a week or so to implement it - ie if you need it in a hurry for the next day for example, it won’t be valid for several days, so that is something to watch out for.

Thanks Stephanie. We aren't travelling until December, so have plenty of time. I am seeing an insurance agent on Monday about changing my home insurer, so I will ask if they do travel cover. I will also take a look at AXA.

Mapfre, I did it by email, they sent me the forms, I signed and scanned the odd pages and it was all done in less than an hour operative immediately.
