Hi peeps I’m changing my uk driving Licence at 70 for a Spanish Licence do they give like for like re categories ? Please don’t forward links to dgt website as it’s as clear as mud !🙄thanks in advance

You will be restricted to Category B unless you specifically express you need the other categories at the medical and during the process and jump through the hoops to do this. It is discussed in more detail in another thread somewhere if you search for it.

my advice would be to not renew the UK Licence as that's the official advice on the DGT website once you become a resident but I have a neighbour who is a spanish resident and did renew the UK licence and was still able to exchange to a spanish one no bother. I guess its down to the official...

... at DGT on the day to interprate the rules.

However as you haven't got residency yet you would need to renew your UK licence as you need some sort of valid licence to drive in Spain - you can still drive here technically as a tourist on it. The 6 month time period to exchange only starts once you become a resident.

hope this helps

Fantastic thanks 👍

Received my licence last week, so approx 3 weeks after my DGT appointment.

Good luck to those still going through the process.

John

You are lucky,

Mrs and I went through a Gestoria to avoid the ques etc thinking the process would be swift...big mistake! Since mid April still no licence in sight, we are starting to worry but gestor's answer is that it "may take little time or it may take long!"

Promise I didn't make it up...  also a couple of friends who presented theirs together time ago had theirs in 3 months for him and 7 for her...not UK but both EU licences.

That'd be great if anyone were to be able to help but as it's in the hands of a gestoria that may be difficult..

Gestor fees were not too high to be honest and communication is acceptable but not knowing if and when we will eventually see a licence is nerve wrecking, on top of holding back other projects.

As a matter of curiosity, since the agreement in March has anyone been asked for their UK NI number in order to exchange a licence? We have after a month of presenting the file and find it odd to see any relation between NI number and driving licences but who knows...

Yes sounds like did the right thing at the time unfortunately it's not worked out.

Re NI I took proof of mine as it can bizarrely be asked for (guessing because it's view in a similar way to the NIE).

The UK NI number is needed to get the DVLA code and summary. It is only valid for 21 days so seeing as yours has taken them so long I presume they have had to get several codes. Every time one expires DGT will contact your gestor to ask for another....then they get it and carry on..it can be a long-winded affair!

Thank you,

At least I know we're not the only ones being asked for it.

As for a long winded part...why am I not surprised? LOL

I also took the DVLA code, really does feel like it's totally hit and miss, I took copies of everything and they didn't ask for half if them !
