Hi I have lived in Spain for nearly 4 years and I love it. I am a pensioner (68) and recently became a resident.  I have never had any problems renewing my SIP on a 6 monthly basis until Friday 17th Jan 2020 where for the first time I went to  local Town Hall. Usually I visit the Town Hall and renew my Padron then go to my Medical centre for my new SIP.  This time foolish me I requested my SIP at the Town Hall. I was refused.  The Padron was renewed but the SIP not!!!  Now the lady who was dealing with my request was lovely and helpful but was adamant that I request a new S1 form from the UK. Nothing wrong with the current one what so ever.  She informed me to get one quickly as Brexit was on the 31st of January and after that she had no idea what was happening and not sure if the UK would continue supporting pensioners in Spain with health cost i.e. prescription costs.I tired explaining in my best Spanish that my S1 was what I had been using for the last 4 years. She was adamant that I obtain a new one and that was that. So medication that I normally had been receiving for 12 euros a month cost me nearly 50.  Not a happy bunny. Anyway I returned home and contacted the the registrations department in UK about my S1 and they informed me that the S1 is a one time issue. However to make matter worse the department could not find any record of my initial request from 2016. I have since emailed copies of my form to the UK and waiting to hear from them.  Has anyone else had an issue renewing their SIP recently.  I wish I had just gone to my medical centre now. I will try them on Monday. Dont tell anyone...

Something very wrong here, either you have your facts wrong or you are not telling the whole story.

1. 6 month SIP cards are issued as a convenience against an EHIC but that became invalid for use in Spain when you became resident  hence the correct refusal to renew it.

2. If you are now 68 then you cannot have been issued with an S1 in 2016 as you would not have been of state pension age then.

3. For your residency (which BTW you should have applied for after your first 6 months in Spain and not after 4 years) you would have had to provide either an S1 or proof of private health insurance so which was it?

If it was an S1 then with your residence card and temporary SIP your medical centre should issue you with a permanent one although they will likely want to see a copy of it.

Hi

Thank you for replying. I am 68 DOB 26.03.1951. I did not realise (ignorance is no excuse I know) that I should have applied for Residency sooner.  I am resident now as of 18th June 2019.  Form S1 was supplied along with other documents.

My EHIC is valid until March 2021. I did present my S1 and EHIC card initially in 2016.

Since then I have always renewed my padron at the town hall and then requested my SIP at the Medical Centre.

Now the lady at the town hall did inform me that my EHIC card had expired but it has not. I did not have it with me at the time so could not dispute it now after checking today I can.

However she also said the EHIC card was now of no use as I am a resident. Basically she said you need a new S1 which of course I dont believe I do.  The form is in excellent condition as issued in September 2016. Also confirmed on Friday 17th Jan by the issuing department in the UK it is a one time issue. Welcome your thoughts and again thanks for your response.

Surprised you could get your SIP at the town hall always thought you got it at the medical centre.

Hi

First time I have done that and I wont try it again. I will go to the medical centre tomorrow.

The only thing is at the town hall the card is more sturdy like a credit card at the med centre it is a laminated piece of paper.

You live and learn. Thanks for your reply.

No probs but thought you got the Padron there and the medical centre issued the SIP.

Best go to the medical centre, last I heard the UK and Spanish Government's had confirmed health care for pensioners until at least 2021, and probably longer if things were reciprocated. So town hall git that wrong.

Hi Jorelcc,

Apologies, but I think you've missed the point of what Ray has explained.  As non-residents, UK citizens can obtain a temporary SIP, that lasts 6 months, on production of their EHIC and passport.  (Rojales do this as a matter of routine, because there are a lot of Brits living there and it eases the admin burden on the medical centre.)

However, once you become resident, you need to make an appointment with the INSS (Spain's equivalent of the Social Security Department) in Torrevieja and obtain the form that allows you to switch your temporary SIP for a permanent one (you'll need to submit your S1 for this) - and as the lady at the Town Hall advised you, do this before 31 January 2020.

If you go to the medical centre tomorrow and obtain another SIP, it will simply be another temporary one and you will be in exactly the same position in 6 months' time - only worse, because the UK will no longer be in the EU (and your EHIC will no longer be valid).

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Socym,

I'm afraid that you're not up to date. Spain's offer to protect UK citizens' rights after Brexit, enshrined in Spanish law, was on the basis that Bojo's government would reciprocate - it hasn't.

Many Brits have been assuming that it will all be OK until the end of the transition period, i.e. 31 December 2020, and it would have been if BoJo had reciprocated Spain's offer on a like-for-like basis, but as things currently stand, Brexit happens on 31 January 2020, i.e. in 12 days time and the only thing that's clear from Jorelcc's experience is that Spanish authorities aren't going to be the 'pushover' they've been in the past.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thank you to you all who have replied gosh this has gotten more complicated than I thought. I am most certainly not up to date thats for sure.

However I do have an S1 sitting here in front of me dont want to attach though for privacy reasons.

I have a green residency card and a current EHIC card although it is not required.

Yes I obviously have been getting my 6 monthly SIP on the strength of my S1 and EHIC and the padron.

I was told that the Padron should be renewed every three months? So confused.com right now but I will get it sorted this coming week.

Thank you everyone..

Hi Jorelcc,

I think you've been renewing a 6-monthly, temporary SIP on the strength of your EHIC and passport only.

As a Non-resident, it's illegal for you to be on the Padron, but Rojales town hall is well-known in this area for encouraging such behaviour.  As RayD and I have explained, your S1 is only relevant now that you have obtained Residencia and need to exchange your temporary SIP for a permanent one.

As a Resident, you don't need to sign on to the Padron every 3 months, although you do need a Padron certificate, no more than 3 months old, if you want to carry out certain bureaucratic activities - such as visiting the INSS with your S1 to obtain the form to switch your temporary SIP to a permanent SIP.

Kind regards,

Kim
