Yes the S1 form is relevant.
If you are a resident of Spain, retired and drawing your UK state pension you can apply for healthcare cover through the S1.
You can have private healthcare too if you think it's necessary.
After you have been a fully legal resident of Spain for one full year you can apply for the Convenio Especial healthcare cover which will give you full access to the Spanish Healthcare system. The monthly charge for the Convenio Especial is around €60 for under 65's and around €157 for over 65's.

Why would I consider Convenio Especial does not the S1 suffice?
TWe have got private healthcare in place as this was a requirement to obtaining the visa, but obviously if S1 is available and legal we would want to end paying for private health care, but hoping this does not jeopardise our application for full residency. I am sure many others would welcome clarification on this.

The S1 form enrols you onto the Spanish Health care system, so once registered you are assigned a GP, so then works pretty much like the NHS, with GP and hospital services included. Plus reduced price prescriptions.
If you’ve taken out the level of private healthcare to get you through NLV then I think you’ll find that this cannot be cancelled
Once you have left the U.K. and if eligible you can apply for your S1, which in basic terms transfers your healthcare from the U.K. to Spain. The S1 is sent to your Spanish address and once you’ve revived it can be used as proof of healthcare to obtain residency.
However you cannot register your S1 with the INSS until you become a Spanish resident, nut the form is enough to prove to the foreigners office that you’re eligible for free healthcare.
So in answer to your question, yes once you’ve got your S1 and registered on the SHS, there is really no need to renew your private health policy.

As soon as you gain your residency, from day one. (Full residency only happens after you have been a legal resident for 5 years)

Yes, once you’ve actually got your TIE card.
When we did ours four years ago we made an appointment at the INSS office, with passports, S1 and residency card, padron plus copies of everything. They gave us a temporary card (SIP card) which we took to our salud a couple of weeks later for the permanent card.
I believe you can actually register you S1 online now, but beware Spain are still a bit in the dark ages with things like that.
We actually got a gestor to help us with everything when we moved, residency, sip cards, driving licence. It’s quite a stressful time, even with assistance.
My advice for dealing with red tape in Spain would be: If you think something will take an hour, than allocate half a day to do it.

To be crystal clear unless you have arrived on an NLV having a TIE is nothing to do with it.
A green residencia will give you exactly the same rights to healthcare.
