Hi Martin,

The reason Klee needs to buy PHI is because this is a thread about applying for a NLV (Non Lucrative Visa).  My post prior to yours explains:

"Hi Klee,

Just to add to what AngeBadge has said, you can't apply for an S1 more than 4 weeks ahead of moving to another country.  Given the length of time the visa could potentially take to process, you could end up in a situation where you've transfered your right to State healthcare to Spain via the S1, but you're still in the UK.  I think most pensioners will buy 1 year's PHI, then cancel it as soon as they've registered their S1 in Spain."

Although you said that you and your wife used your S1s for your residency application, you didn´t explain earlier that it was for residency applications submitted prior to the Brexit deadline of 31 December 2020, rather than under the new rules for Third Country Nationals.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thank you Alex...

After reading this post, it is all becoming VERY complicated, and really, I am unable to cope with it any further!

EVERYTHING that you need to do, is 'finance' based!

What was that...More then 500 euros, just for ONE transaction?

I wanted to buy another property, so the bank advised me, that it would be a minimum of 750 euros 'set up fee'! What the hell is that? Because of their sheer greed, I abandoned my plans!

The 'Spanish dream' is now turning into a NIGHTMARE! I wanna go home!😅🅱️.

The wonders of brexit. All because the U.K. is a third country. Don’t despair.  Spain can be burocratic but it is thorough. All worth it at the end.

Not as thorough as they like to make us think they are, our NIE numbers were swapped and now the details on our cards are wrong. We'd get it sorted but really we can't be bothered I've had enough of Spanish bureaucracy to last me 2 lifetimes. I have also heard of others who have the incorrect wording on their TIE cards I sincerely hope this does not cause any problems when they apply for their "permanent" card after 5 years.

Hi  I don't know whether I dare tell my daughter.  They are having enough problems now, thinking about changing their driving licence to a Spanish one.  At the moment they are in the process of learning Spanish but do not know enough to pass the test (time limited of course).    They are fed up with every going wrong.  They also have an English registration car.  The price of cars are going up due to the lack of new cars etc world wide.    By the time they have everything sorted the year will be up and they have to start again😩

Hi Denise,

Your daughter needs good advice, but it's also important to have a positive attitude.  Spain is not as advanced as the UK (it was a dictatorship until 1976!), but if they focus on the reasons why they want to live here, I'm sure they will be in a better frame of mind to deal with any challenges.  Speaking of which, if you can give more detail of the precise issues, we may be able to help.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi,

I just wanted to add my experience of applying for the NLV so far at the Spanish Consulate in Manchester.

Attended appointment on Tuesday 14th Dec' 2021.

I was early and went to the window and presented my documents as follows:

2 x EX01, 2 x Visa application forms, 1 x Modelo 790 form, 1 x Full copy of passport and pages, 1 x copy of NIE, 1 x copy of health policy certificate, 1 x copy of ACRO, 1 x copy of own doctors certificate, 1 x copy of marriage certificate, 1 x copy of pension funds and 1 x copy of savings accounts.

The marriage, ACRO and own Doctors certificate's were translated and apostilled.

The gave me back the following:

1 x EX01, 1 x Visa application, full copy of passport (they just copied the front page themselves).

My wife attended with me and although we stood at the same window we were treated individually, she had the same experience with her documents.

I was asked when I would like the Visa to start form and I said from 16th Feb 2022. So they gave me back my copy of the health policy certificate and asked me to email them a copy showing the dates from 16th Feb 2022 to 28th Feb 2023 (which DKV have now supplied and I have sent to the Consulate).

They kept all of the translated and apostilled document originals (I'm not sure that they should keep these as they cost me £600 and I consider them my property).

This process so far, including the application fee paid direct when at the CONSULATE, is around £5K.

The outcomes will be emailed to us separately  in 2/3 weeks.

Hi mdh,

Great post, very clear and informative, thank you.  Good luck with your applications and look forward to hearing that you receive your NLVs in good time.

Best wishes,

Kim

Hi kimmy

Thankyou for the encouragement.  I have been informed that there is a driving school in la Zenia.  Apparently you can take the written test in English.  They appear to be very helpful with tips and advice.  The driving test is in Spanish and they advise about left right etc in Spanish.

Since (I believe) with the visa if you want to carry on driving you have to take the test but i do have one concern, I heard you have to give up your English licence when you get your Spanish one.  Do you know if this is true.

Hi Denise,

Yes, for UK citizens who become resident in Spain since 1 January 2021, you have up to 6 months to exchange your UK driving licence for Spanish.  Although this requires you to take a Spanish driving test, it's not a problem as you can drive in the UK on your Spanish licence while visiting the UK.

Kind regards,

Kim
