Surprised there has been no mention of insurance for dogs.

See below link.

I think that most household insurances include some sort of cover for that, but worth checking of course.

But probably not for wolves !

Hi Ron TT,

The problem is that not all dogs will be able to get "Fully Comprehensive" insurance.  For example, my rescue dog was 1 year old when we got him, many rescue dogs are older than that, and so insurance companies will only provide medical insurance at much higher premiums, if at all.  Veterinary care is relatively cheap in Spain, so we just set aside money each month to cover his vaccinations and potential health issues.  Now that our woof is almost 8 years old, I don't think we'd get medical cover for him at all, so I'm looking into whether he can be covered on our Home insurance, or whether insurance companies are offering a bespoke Third Party Liability policy for dogs - I can't believe the insurance industry hasn't thought of it!

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim, Good to hear about your rescue dogs. We sadly lost our previous rescue dog a couple of months ago.  Now, we have another one who will be 2 on Thursday, having spent over a year in a rescue centre !

I have been checking with our insurance company ,Linea Directa, and I can confirm that pets ( no mention of age) are pretty well covered in case of, or causing accidents etc, provided they are registered with the corresponding chip and that they live with you.

Hope that info will help.      Good luck with your rescues !

Cheers . Adrian, Dawn and "scruffy!"

Hi, i dont think this new insurance mandate has anything to do with covering the dogs medical issues, its a civil liability insurance incase of damage to third parties, i suspect that means for example, cover if the dog attacks someone, causes an accident, destroys property etc etc.

That's correct, but that wouldn't be "fully comprehensive" insurance.  When you buy medical insurance cover for your woof, Third Party Liability cover is usually included, as it is with Home insurance.  The problem, which is also alluded to in the newspaper article, is that only a small percentage of dog owners in Spain actually have insurance.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Adrian, Dawn and Scruffy,

Many thanks for your feedback.  We're with Liberty Seguros and I'm waiting on confirmation from them regarding cover for our Podenco X, Eddie Edible Edelicious 😋  I'll update this thread with their response.

By the way, have you posted Scruffy-Dog's portrait on the Pet Photo section? 😉

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi, Kim         Did not know anything about a Pet Photo section, so will now investigate. Thanks for that info. By the way, our rescue dogs name is actually Cleo, but even after  a professional grooming session, he is still incredibly "scruffy" but a smashing pet and friend ! After some basic research we think that Scruffy is a Prodenco X as well. .

Have not been able to find  a Pet photo section, can you help please.( we are well past our sell by date and  very out of touch !)

Cheers !

It will be interesting to see how they will check up on the millions of dogs around Spain. I like to think there will be a cross check of identity chips but there will be endless dogs who aren’t even chipped. Now,  if they can stop indiscriminate breeding …..
