After seeing some posts lately regarding car hire and the increase in prices this year, i emailed our regular car hire place, Wiber,  basically asking what is going on ! Here is their response...

"As you know tourism based companies are struggling at the moment. On top of the lack of tourism in 2020 and 2021, the covid-19 crisis is effecting manufacturers and, therefore, there is a huge shortage of cars available for rent this year. Those are events that escape our control. We are struggling to survive and maintain all of our staff employed at the moment. Prices, like in any other business, depend on the supply and demand range and, this year, the supply is going to be scarce to say the least. We are doing our best to survive at this very moment"

So, looks like those of us who will be hiring a car this year, will be paying a hell of a lot more than in previous years !

Car hire is the most stressful part of a trip for a lot of people. Those car hire firms that persist in carrying out scams have brought suspicion on the whole industry. The reply to you would seem to suggest that they are using new cars this year as they are depending on manufacturers to supply them. I wonder what happened to last years cars which were hardly driven as there weren’t any customers ? I hired in September and the yard was full of cars. The car I was given then had just 3,000km on it. I doubt there was much more added to that afterwards. I’d be interested to hear from folks later on to see if they got 2021 models.

Yesterday I took a quote direct from the Centauro website.

2 weeks in July for a Fiat Tipo €1100, no one will pay this ridiculous amount, they will definitely go out of business at this rate.

I am hoping that all this nonsense changes if/when Spain is placed on the uk green list and more people are allowed to travel.

I agree, €1100 is outrageous! I do wonder if it'll put people off tho ?  I mean its 4 times as much as some people's flight !

I have always hired cars whenever we are in Spain but I will now give serious consideration to to a shuttle transfer down to La Florida.

It would limit what we are able to do and see whilst there but at those prices we will do without a car.

Im thinking the same, a taxi to and from the airport may well do us this year, i feel for people who live a lot further away and rely on a car, and something tells me too the car hire places will be finding a lot more "scratches" on their cars this year !!

I agree, car hire excess insurance would be essential, I have always done this anyway ... if you could find car hire at a reasonable cost?

€1100 is crazy. But why not look at the others. Lara cars at the airport and La Marina. Seat Ibiza €378+fuel, including excess insurance, no extras and no waiting time when you pick up our drop off.

Wow! We bought our car three years ago as our regular trips were really starting to stack up in respect of car hire charges. Chicken feed compared to now, it seems.

This offering from a member might be worth a punt 🤪🥂

For sale: Opel vectra estate 1.9 cdti 150bhp
