And you have set your location on this site as Santa Pola :>)

OK, so here are some things. Sincere apologies if you know all this.

Whilst there is no Brit community as such in SP, there are a few (maybe three) places that have intercambio idiomas - in theory. In practice a lot of chat is in English but that can be useful at times. You can learn and practice Spanish elsewhere :>) Contacts can be helpful.

There are two St James bars. One is at the seafront area along Av Granada. The other is near the castle - this has (or had) language exchange meetings. Can't be sure as I am not there now. Another venue is at the Ave Maria bar in the Playa Levante area.

I used to go the AM a lot. Along Av Granada is a bar called Laico (dos). The first Laico is by the castle. If you go to Laico dos, mention me - also at Ave Maria. Round the corner from AM is the Good Mood bar - please mention me there too :>)

The Spanish courses run by the Cultural Centre are really good value. Two sessions per week - dirt cheap. There are intensive courses in Alicante - for example from zero to B2 in three months. More expensive but, in my view, well worth it.

The windmill that can be seen from the boats is really worth the walk. You can get most of the way by car. There is a walkway right out over the edge of the cliff.

Most people omit the central area, away from the sea, but there are great walks and cycle trails there - lots of olive groves etc.

Glad you like it. I hope people remember me.

Cheers.

Brian

Hello

Ave Maria bar is now closed😪 but the intercambio group is alive and well and moved to the Polamar Hotel . We meet on a Thursday in the cafe on the fifth floor at 8 pm . Hope to see you there in the new year!

I attend the language lessons at the Centro Civico and can recommend them.

Hello Everyone,

I am planning to move to Santa Pola very near future for its climate but fear I may miss the UK eventually. Santa Pola seems very, very quiet.

Is having a better climate worth the sacrifice of the familiar?

Does the novelty of the climate wear off  and have you become home sick after some time? I have known the to happen who move to quiet parts of Queensland, which are sleepy little towns.

How easy it is to meet expats in the Santa Pola area?

Is Santa Pola a town on the quiet side, perhaps for someone living there full time.

Hi, my partner has a house in Santa pola and I love staying there. Yes it is very Spanish and it doesn't have an expat community and very few English people, Though that may or may not suit you. I'm actually staying a little while in La florida which has a large English and Irish expat Community and playa-flamenca is also an option. I'm actually planning on moving here permanently and ive been looking at some lovely affordable houses. There is probably more going on in comparison to Santa pola. And as I'll be on my own alot of the time these areas would suit my needs. Also there is Zenia Boulevard with its many shops and restaurants. And Santa pola is only about 1hr 30min away so i will have the best of both worlds. It will be big change for me moving from Ireland to Spain, but I'm very excited and at the same time a little nervous. But i truly believe it's going to be a good move. So i wish you the very best of luck and take care. Susan

Hello Elinspain, yes that is right, I originally posted over four years ago so alerting us to be aware of the date of a posting in future is very helpful. It is an easy thing to do I guess and sometimes the information could be helpful regardless of passage of time and sometimes it could be completely irrelevant.

Susan6060, thank you for taking the time and trouble to reply, I appeciate the trouble you went to and your contribution.

By way of update, I have now been living full-time in Santa Pola for just over three years. To answer my own question "Is Santa Pola too quiet...", the most glaringly obvious answer, of course, is "It depends what you are looking for". My idea was to build a circle of friends and that has been possible in the time I have been here. "It's what you make of it" as they say and I certainly am not missing anything. As time has gone by, I come to realise that life and opportunities in the Big Smoke can be overrated. It is what it is, our attitude to this is an option.

Susan6060,  I wish you all the very best with your move and hope that it lives up to your expectations.

Elinspain, thank you for your continued contributions to the forum. I have certainly noted these and value them highly.
