Advice on Rabies vaccination for pets travelling through France and Spain

I stand to be corrected, but I think your vet has to issue a certificate confirming that your dog is OK to travel, and that this has to be done immediately before you start the journey.

Your passport needs to have the certificate and stamp for you rabies vaccination. These usually last 3 years, this is sufficient to get you back into the UK at Calais.

You also need Tapeworm and a vets certification that they are healthy before you bring them back to the UK..

How this will work post Brexit though. I'm holding off booking the Eurotunnel at the moment 

Thanks very much - we have all that we need in the Pet Passport already then - all signed by Vet etc.  Just keep hearing that we may need blood test results to prove that Rabies vaccination has been successful and over a certain level.  Am just trying to find out via this forum if anyone has had to provide this info in either France/Spain.

I wasn't told this by our Vet but will double check with them.  Pet Passport is all up to date with vaccinations including Rabies vaccination.  Have heard that sometimes you need a certificate following a blood test to certify that the Rabies vaccination levels are sufficiently high enough.  Just wanted to know if anyone has been asked for this on way through France/Spain.

Travelled back and forth numerous times with our dogs. Never heard the blood test thing before. Maybe other parts of Europe

I travelled through France & Spain, ( Calais to South Costa Brava) in January this year with my dog. All you need on your pet passport is proof ( your vet will fill this in on the pet passport) that your pet has had the rabies jab. No blood tests are necessary.

You do not need anything else apart from the pet passport which your vet will provide for you, no need for checks that your pet is fit to travel etc

Please ignore this information it is only valid for the UK to Europe journey.

The other way round you need Tapeworm and fitness to travel from the Spanish vet.

I understand from my vet that rabies vaccine and up to date boosters and passports are valid up until 31st December. Meaning you can travel out before the rules change on 1 st January (brexit) with existing paperwork  

The requirements then change to this new blood test certificate etc and can only travel after 4 months from the date of it. 

So if you wish to travel in the new year you need to get this blood test ASAP.
