Did our shopping in Mercadona this morning, Generally prices are up 10% from 14 days ago. Fish was cheaper than last week.

Sunflower oil up 100%, we rarely use it. Olive oil around 10% Why, It is Spanish after all and the oil is from a few months ago.

Filled up with Diesel, Thought it was a good idea given that Crude and Gas have dropped over 25% this week. Surprise Surprise.

Last Friday 1.49 litre, today 1.86 a litre. I have been topping up each week but I will keep an eye on the web for the pump prices from now on.

Just a final note on the subject I would not put something on a forum if I didn’t believe it to be true, so yes,  I could back in December get over twice as much shopping in Aldi as I can get here in Spain and if I went and did an equivalent shop in Iceland here I would probably get four times as much back in the UK, and that’s obviously because they are branded items and imported.

I find I can live here in Torrevieja reasonably well on my State Pension.  I've no idea of prices in the UK , yet despite the price spike in many products here, a little bit of careful purchasing I'm sure means little difference with UK.  And 60% difference - absolutely no way.  I ...

...can get oranges at 50¢ a kilo.  Potatoes at 59¢, tomatoes at 89¢.  That was a week or so ago so prices may have increased.  Mercadona's own beer is still way under €1 a litro.

But above all, no one who thinks food is expensive here has mentioned how much cheaper Council Tax is in the UK!!!!

That's because for a 3 bedroom house like mine at  €210 pa would, say in Gosport Hampshire, be around (in Euros)  3,240.

Let's remember that before we compare and complain about food prices here to the UK.

If you have no idea on food prices in the UK please don’t comment to the contrary as you say you have no idea.

According to The Numbeo website groceries in Bedford UK are approx 22.58% higher than in Alicante and Milton Keynes 42.6% higher so I am slightly confused, are you saying if I spent 115 euro in Spain on groceries I would get the same in the UK for £40 ?

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the price comparisons between Spain and the UK if your figures from The Numbero are right if I lived in Milton Keynes I would go shopping in Bedford, they are only 18 miles apart!

I don't want to start an international incident but I was 'just wondering' that when the Ukrainian/Russian conflict is over and the price of crude oil falls to below a dollar a barrel and the price of fuel falls back to about 1.20 euro's per litre, if the supermarkets here in Spain will reverse their recent price increases ?

Regards

Gary

If sanctions stay in place once things have settled down, the Russians will have loads of cheap oil, coal, gas and grain to themselves.
