I am looking for advice. We are looking to rent in Torrevieja so we can research where we would be best settling and buying our forever home. We want to live in a high expat area. ( we are both learning spanish) but our son who is an adult and has aspergers is trying but would benefit from a more english speaking environment to begin with. (he will probably end up speaking spanish quicker than us!) we are both early 50s and want some honest advice on where is best to rent and eventually buy. We do not want to be secluded so want to be near all amenities as we are very sociable. We were suppose to come over early part of the year but Covid 19 put a stop to that. We are now looking at flying over as soon as its safe and starting our search. The plan was to be living in spain before december 31st but not sure that going to be viable now :( .

Any help or advice would be great from anyone that feels they can give us a point in the right direction.

Thank you

Andy & Marica

Try contacting Rent 2 Go, run by an English family they provide an excellent rental property management Company and would be able to show you a variety of properties in suitable areas.

Hi Andy and Marica,

Hopefully you'll  get a few responses from different areas to give you a better idea.

We moved over here 17 years ago when I was 38 and partner 50, so not to retire. We rented in El Chapparal for 6 months to give us a chance to explore where we liked and distance to where we had jobs. We didnt move far as ended up buying in La Siesta! Although a predominantly British urbanisation on our road we have English, Norwegian, French ,German and Spanish. We love living here as although it's an urbanisation (with communities on it also), you dont feel like you're over crowded. There are shops and bars within walking distance with the larger supermarkets being a short drive away, you can walk to Mercadona depending on how much you enjoy walking. If you do enjoy fitness the Torrevieja municipal sports centre is a 5 minute drive away or, if like me, you enjoy running in the open air we are on the edge of the La Mata natural park and lake which is beautiful.

Other places that have a high expat residency that may be suggested to you are Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig, Los Altos, Los Balcones and La Zenia to name but a few, all within Torrevieja.

We are very happy here and love the lifestyle. Hope you find what you're looking for and enjoy your new life.

Sharon

Thank you for responding... we are looking at a few areas... la marina being one of them... and Los Altos/ Balcones being the other... i just like the look at some of the properties I’ve seen here. Can’t wait to eventually get out to have a good look :-)

If you haven't visited much before make sure you know what everything is like in February and August before buying. It seems as if the whole of Spain decamps to the Costas in August and it can be very noisy in to the early hours. Much as I love them, the Spanish are VERY loud and love their fireworks, the louder the better.
You will need heating in the winter months and be aware of flash flooding during heavy downpours.
If your son has some independence look for something near a bus route.

He is independent so he will walk everywhere so That’s why we need to be near amenities... we currently have flights booked for Oct and February but looking to Also come ASAP to look around... only ever been as holiday makers which is why I want to see everything out side of the main summer season.

I have looked into the health insurance and some of the financial issues and legal stuff.. some of which is different depending on who’s advising... we are hoping to get proper advice from someone in Spain. I’ve seen lots of companies advertising services but we are going to check out the area we are interested in and then go from there! I’m fully aware it’s not a case of packing a bag and jumping on a plane. Although there’s a lot more involved than we originally thought. Which is why I joined this group to try and get a better insight :-)

For Health Insurance you can't go wrong with Alfonso at Gran Alacant Insurances, see their advertisement down the right hand side of the Forum Homepage, he has helped us with our Private Health Insurance and I cannot recommend ho¡im highly enough.
