Proving a relationship

My partner and I are looking to relocate to Spain and are wondering what paperwork we would need to prove our relationship (as I will be piggy-backing off of him to get residency). We have been together for 9 years but the house in London is in my name (had it before he turned up!) and as he has a business, we don't have joint bank accounts. Any suggestions on what we can show? We do have life insurance with the other person the beneficiary, same with our wills.

Thank you

Hi the Spanish only recognise married couples,  you cannot piggy back on him to get residence, I've tried it

Not disputing your experience but the info in the link suggests otherwise.

This being Spain though it would of course not be the first time two similar or even identical situations resulted in different outcomes!

What is beyond doubt is that in Spanish terms as things stand the OP and her 'partner' effectively have no relationship to each other at all.

Piggybacking can work where one or the couple is an EU citizen, could either of you get an Irish passport?

This may be a stupid question, but can you not each apply for separate residency?

The rules probably differ depending on which visa you are using to obtain your residency!

Friends of ours had so much hassle trying to prove a relationship that they ended up getting married and that was a few years ago when obtaining residencia was so much easier.

Might have to get married then! I can piggy- back off him if we can prove our relationship.

I could get a NLV whilst he just uses his EU passport but it seems easier (and cheaper!) for me to get a 'family reunion visa'

That is very helpful,  thank you. It seems that it may depend on where we want to live as to what the requirements will be.  I think that we will form a civil- partnership here in London and then register it in Spain.
