Alicante is very humid and the cold gets in your bones, as we say here.
I recomend natural gas, and the Spanish goverment together with the city halls are subsidizing Natural Gas pipelines so all your complexes have the posibility to install the natural gas in your houses, and the central heating so winters are softer and nicer:)
Villamartin, Algorfa, Orihuela Costa, and so on already have natural gas. Natural gas kw is 6 cents, while Electricity is 14-19 cents /Kw. Inverters are extraexpemsive and only heat the top of the room..;(. Natural gas heating is confortable for those months and you think you are in Englang, and will not spend a cold winter in Sunny Alicante in the morning, and cold and humid Alicante at night..
If you like a quote on central heating for a whole house I could advise.

Carolina

No. If I was i would probably invest in central heating. I do about 2 mths a year out there. Lock the house up end of November then open it up Feb 1/2 term
You are joking Spain in the winter is fantastic as long as you have good heating and as said previously on the posts if you have a log burner so cheap to run the difference is most of the winter you have blue sky nothing better than Christmas day at the beach it has only rained one time in 15 years!

Yes, we have a big built-in log fire, it's our main source of heating, and it's rated at over 20 kilowatts.
A good one isn't cheap - to get an idea of prices have a look at the Leroy Merlin and BricoDepot websites.

Last autumn we spend €290 on logs. I always go for encina - holm oak - which is 16 cents a kilo. You can buy other types of wood down to 9 cents a kilo, but you'd burn more of the cheaper stuff than you would encina.
When we bought the logs, I expected that we'd only actually use three-quarters of them, as we have done in previous years. However, Margaret's got cancer (from which she's slowly recovering) and has lost a lot of weight. Probably because of that she feels cold all the time, so the fire is kept stoked up more than in previous years. I'm hoping that next winter we'll only be burning about €200 of logs.
As an aside, it's a lot more interesting to watch a log fire than to watch a Dimplex radiator!
We are renovating our apartment in Pego so have some options. We are considering underfloor electric heating. We will floor the apartment throughout with a good quality wood laminate that we know from experience works well in this arrangement. Would welcome any comments / suggestions.
As electricity is expensive in Spain you may want to re think I agree a nice way to do it but could work out costly if you don't mind A/C that is a cheaper way of doing it.

Ok this is all helpful and useful but there seems to be a bit of contrary opinion here - does anyone have the actual detail on heating costs? I've seen the KW pricing outlined (electricity 3x price of gas) but others saying inverters offer a 3:1 efficiency output (I know my heat pump in Scotland does)....which could make them same or slightly cheaper than gas?
If there is not a huge difference how long would I need to install gas central heating before I would break even?
Also if I am not there all the time would gas be a potential hazard in terms of maintenance and safety? Would there be additional maintenance costs?

The previous poster sells natural gas installation services, so their views may be slightly subjective.
I have a holiday home and don't visit during the colder months. However, I have access to natural gas in our street so looked at the cost vs return. As a holiday home it just wasn't worth it at all. Payback period of around 20 years for us
If I lived out there permanently it was more viable, but still worked a 5/7 year payback period. Which I probably wouldn't consider viable
