I’m wondering what exactly you want to ship over to your new home in Spain. Nowadays, there’s an IKEA which stocks good quality furniture and many household items eg pictures , kitchen ware, lamps, rugs and all very reasonably priced. Also, pack things into a case and take with you when flying. EasyJet snd Ryanair will transport bicycles too. The cost of driving a van, tolls, fuel, ferry will be pricey so carry them with you on a flight.

You may live to regret bringing old stuff from home once you move as many people have done. Hold fast and think before jumping through hoops at the port.

If totally determined to drive, come over to Ireland and go Rosslare to Le Havre without incurring any hassle or duties. EU to EU

Thanks Grannyrose but I think crossing the border from Uk to EU Ireland is the same criteria. As to what I want to take, my furniture is all Ercol top quality solid wood furniture. I also have 3 all wool large carpets for the winter months. I like quality and IKEA just doesn't do it for me. Anyway need to research more and surprised no one since the 1/1/21 has tried to do a self drive.

Regards

You travel from the mainland over to NI ( Belfast ) and drive down. No border anywhere.

I love good furniture snd my home is full of beautiful old pieces handed down but totally unsuitable for Spanish holiday homes. Lots of people have finally got rid of the wooden furniture favoured by the Spanish and are buying modern and stylish furniture. The rugs will be great in the winter. I’m not trying to tell you what to do but the only furniture I shipped over was a king size divan bed as unavailable when we bought years ago. Best and most comfortable bed and well worth shipping. Nightmare trying to carry the mattress upstairs as it was SOO heavy !

A lot of the living room space isn’t big and usually the dining table snd chairs have to be in the room too. Many people are opting for the big, luxurious L shaped suite.  No armchairs .

I’ve given you my advice so wish you well.

I am grateful for your advice, any advice is good advice. My "holiday home" is a large detached 5 bed Finca, perfect for my wooden furniture. It has taken many years to replace all our belongings after a total ransacking in 2008. We had brought over by Courier 5 ton of belongings costing £5k and 6months later we lost everything. I do mean everything, light fittings, even curtains and poles. Not an item left behind. At least £20k of value and its taken all these years to replace like for like on pensions. Oh, just to add Caixa bank our insurer refused to pay out, 3 solicitors later and we gave up. These items although not the original items over our 50+years of marriage still have a big sentimental value as its been hard to source items and the one thing I maybe did wrong was store in UK as I have no faith in it never happening again in Spain and it's safe in Uk. I just never picked up the changes on transporting after Brexit and if you are a non resident 21% iva is taxed on the value of items as well as customs handling charges and the procedures for self transporting are horrendous. All the info on Gov.UK is for commercial transporters and even they are up in arms regarding the new procedures.

Have to contact customs agents now and get more info. I, m not beaten yet.
