It’s a Amblyocarenum Walckenaeri from the Cyrtaucheniidae family (Wafer trapdoor spiders) it’s currently mating season for them and males follow the females pheromones, sometimes the scent leads them to get a little sidetracked. They are harmless and will not bite unless provoked.

Wow great photo. I can’t believe how big they are 😱 I’ve never seen one like it before. Thank you for that it’s good to know what kind of spider it is. Thanks again Becky.

I fished one of these from my pool (In Pilar de la Horadada) and tossed it over the wall as I thought it was dead and didn't want the dogs eating it. When I took the dogs out it was climbing up the wall!! It looked like a baby tarantula, very black, reared back on its hind legs as a warning.  I googled it and couldn't quite identify it, although I came across a report saying they are quite common ( if it was the right one). Put it in a jar to show my friend then let it go in some scrubland. Makes me more aware where I put my hands when I'm gardening now as it's the first big spider I've seen here in a year and half!

I think there’s quite a lot of them about. Same here it’s the biggest spider I’ve seen and scary. Apparently they like the pool as so many people have found them in their pools. That one did that It’s front body went up, I’ve never moved so fast. My son got it in a pot and let it go in a field. X

My wife would just put her clog on it.  No creepie crawlies survive on our patch.
