Well, as you are all no doubt waiting with bated breath for the outcome! Have just been and bought a ‘small’ - 4kg - Indesit drier, which I can easily fit in a cupboard upstairs. I justified the purchase in Spain of an electricity consuming item on the grounds that it was approximately half the size of the UK one and I don’t have quite so much laundry to dry.

So, thank you all again for your advice!

Scott, that’s exactly what I bought. However, I just brought it home from our local - Teulada - Bertomeu electrical store, 219 eu. Much closer to us than Carrefours, although some 20 eu more expensive.

Thanks, Josie. Everyone’s opinions seem to be similar to your own! It’s the kind of kit one never imagined needing here!

Yes I know what you mean. We came here last October and had masses amounts of rain in december. We decided on a tumble dryer and thought we would end up selling it again but can't do without it this weather. My Spanish neighbours have their washing out all day but can't imagine it drying completely. I can't say I have noticed it being too much more expensive but cannot have damp washing around on airers.

I'd point out that a tumble dryer is worth having in summer, to soften towels and clothes that have baked as stiff as a board in the hot sun.

As regards the make to choose, in my opinion is shouldn't matter very much as a tumble dryer is a simple piece of kit. If our old machine ever goes terminal, I'd personally buy Fagor (Spanish) as we know that their repair service is excellent. Again, personally, I wouldn't buy from Carrefour, as they have a reputation for poor after sales support.

Yes, I agree, can’t be doing with it! The reason I am concerned about running costs is that our entire house is electric - cooking/hot water/under floor heating etc etc. Although both heating systems are effectively heat pumps/exchangers, the u/floor heating I imagine eats up fuel like nobodies business, although it’s supposedly as efficient as possible. So adding anything to these charges is gritted teeth - and we only run the floor heating when absolutely desperate. Having said which, I suppose we save on butano!!

I agree, Jim, this was another reason for obtaining one - sick of towels and socks one has to soften with a hammer!!!!

Although driers, simple as they may be, are now MUCH more sophisticated apparently- and they would have tobetojustify the current prices - the latest thing being to incorporate heat pumps to recycle the hot air. This no doubt being highly effective, but to justify the purchase prices, you’d have to be doing a hell of a lot of laundry to make effectively noticeable savings!!!!

Well to be honest carrefor after sales service ain’t that great. We will be measuring up and finding a place to locate one now when we come out, we didn’t buy a washer dryer as they are so excited expensive and the space in the kitchen we opted for a dishwasher instead of a dryer so we will find space we have a few storage cupboards etc.

Thanks for the conversation, although at 46 I’m wondering how my life has come to the world of tumble dryers in Spain. Bring on the sangria and Xmas champagne that’s what I say 😉

Scott - you aren't allowed to use the word 'champagne' in Spain, but you can drink as much cava as you can manage!
