Hi everyone!

I would appreciate any advice as I seem to be hitting a brick wall. I've had  permanent residency since 2007. My ex husband was autonomo up to 2019 when we divorced. I've been between Spain and the UK until 2022 when I came back permanently as I still own my house here. I went to renew my sip card and was told I have to pay for health care as I'm not in the social security system. However I've also been told that as I was a permanent resident before 2012 I should be entitled to free health care as a Spanish national. I'm slowly building up my hours of work until I can go autonomo but obviously I need to know any possible health problems are covered.

I really appreciate any advice or feedback.

Thanks in advance

Jo

Have you registered on the Padron since your return? If you're not on the Padrom your health centre won't entertain you.

Do you have a residency card that describes your status as permanent resident? Does this card have an expiry date? One of the main advantages of permanent residency is that it allows you to live and work in the country indefinitely. However, every 5 years you will have to renew it.

You've had permanent residency since 2007 - so are tax resident in Spain since then?

Why then are you saying you came back permanently to Spain in 2022 - either you've been here permanently or you haven't? Reading your follow on comments suggest you haven't been here permanently since 2007 or if you have, you haven't been paying appropriate taxes.

Without knowing exactly what you did and also what happened in terms of your partner (at the time)  - at the minute we'd be guessing what your tax position shows etc.

What you need to do is legalise your position so as to gain access to the state services re health etc.

Hi George!

Thanks for your response. I was here for 10 years solid from 2007 until 2017 and during that time my then husband was autonomo. I left to be with family in the UK after the split but was between the UK and Spain as my daughter/ granddaughter live here in Spain. As I mentioned I made the decision to move here permanently in 2022 due to family issues. I do classes particulares teaching English but it's very irregular due to holidays, kids being ill etc...hence until I can find either contracted work or more hours to cover autonomo I'm just surviving. I just want to know whether my health is covered as I've had different advice. Even my local social security office doesn't seem to know what I should do. I'm going to speak to a gestor next week but just thought I'd ask here on the forum to see if anyone is or has been in a similar situation. If I'm not covered for healthcare then I need to take appropriate advice.

Thanks again
